The lights are on
Fighting games have seen an enormous wellspring of attention from the community at large over the past five years. The resurgence was spurred in large part by Street Fighter IV, which is about to get yet another iteration.
Unfortunately for fans, Darkstalkers Resurrection didn't garner quite as much enthusiasm as Capcom had hoped. The title failed to reach sales expectations, and the publisher has unfortunately decided to put the franchise back in cold storage.
Our TakeI've seen a number of people wondering how Capcom can make this decision based on an old game simply re-released in HD. If you take a look at Capcom's recent track record, it includes a number of HD updates. Resident Evil has had two, Devil May Cry has a collection, and entries in the Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom series have been up-rezzed.
Capcom has enough historical data to know how these HD releases should perform. If Darkstalkers didn't bring in the revenue was anticipated, there is no way that gamers can expect the publisher to put money behind a brand new title in the series.
Especially given Capcom's recent financial problems, a fairly weak slate of upcoming retail titles, and their expectation that costs are going to rise significantly in the next generation, caution is called for. Regardless, this is a disappointing turn of events for fans.

A dark day for Darkstalkers...
I bought Darkstalkers Resurrection awhile ago on XBLA and have been playing the hell out of it ever since. I remember one of you guys saying that Capcom was testing the waters for a new game and it's too bad it won't be happening.
I'm not that surprised. They seem to treat HD re-releases as tests these days instead of just for what they are.
Capcom is all about not having me interested in them.
you mean a game that your average gamer has never heard of did poorly when it was re-released with little to no advertising? I'm shocked. I guarantee if Capcom had released a HD Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 combo pack it would have sold much better than Dark Stalkers did. HD up games that people know about and they will buy them.
Sad day for Capcom. Capcom's new next-gen engine is looking great though!
I was never a Darkstalkers fan, but I had little exposure to the original. It is pretty sad that it didn't go as well as most of their other HD offerings.
Not sure why there is so much Capcom hate in the comments though. Their recent offerings have been enjoyable if you let them be. But if you are expecting their games to be different from what they are, then you will just end up being disappointed I suppose.
That's what happens Crapcom
I didn't even know there WAS a new Darkstalkers game out.
