The lights are on
Fighting games have seen an enormous wellspring of attention from the community at large over the past five years. The resurgence was spurred in large part by Street Fighter IV, which is about to get yet another iteration.
Unfortunately for fans, Darkstalkers Resurrection didn't garner quite as much enthusiasm as Capcom had hoped. The title failed to reach sales expectations, and the publisher has unfortunately decided to put the franchise back in cold storage.
Our TakeI've seen a number of people wondering how Capcom can make this decision based on an old game simply re-released in HD. If you take a look at Capcom's recent track record, it includes a number of HD updates. Resident Evil has had two, Devil May Cry has a collection, and entries in the Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom series have been up-rezzed.
Capcom has enough historical data to know how these HD releases should perform. If Darkstalkers didn't bring in the revenue was anticipated, there is no way that gamers can expect the publisher to put money behind a brand new title in the series.
Especially given Capcom's recent financial problems, a fairly weak slate of upcoming retail titles, and their expectation that costs are going to rise significantly in the next generation, caution is called for. Regardless, this is a disappointing turn of events for fans.

Well that's sad. I was happy when Capcom released this remake, hoping for a new game in the series in the near future. I guess I just have to wait and see if they decide to try again in a few years time.
If they didn't price a couple of decade old games so high I would have picked them up. It's the reason I didn't buy the SF2 HD remix, or 3rd Strike ( until the recent sale for 3rd Strike). They price this stuff too high all in the name of nostalgia, and to see if enough people are willing to pay that much to relive it again. The reaction when Ono debuted a trailer last year should have been enough to show that fans are welcome to a new entry in the darkstalkers series, I certainly was.
Quick someone call Double Helix to work out a deal to put them in as Killer Instinct guest characters.
Man, too bad, I was hoping to get this but never came around to it I hope it gets more attention soon.
I didnt even know this was out
Not going to lie but if Capcom actually made a new entry instead of re releasing an HD port of a game many already owned, then I can guarantee they'll see the numbers they want with this series because nobody really wants to replay the same game over and over, they want something new and fresh while familiar to them as well. And if they really wanted numbers they should have released a physical version as well just because no everyone has an internet connection to download PSN/XBLA games. I mean we did pretty much bash the Xbox One for its always online feature and how not everyone has an internet connection.
I was hoping for a new Darkstalkers when Resurrection was released. I passed on it, because I had already played it to death. Guess we will have to enjoy the characters from the game in crossover titles going forward.
Well this is a shame. I was planning on downloading Darkstalkers Ressurection soon. However, I'm not really surprised by this because as a Darkstalkers fan I have to say that it seems like a pretty niche series as I don't really hear a lot of people talk about it like they do, say Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.
Sad. I really love this franchise and the characters.
Still my favorite fighting game franchise, I supported the HD release and enjoyed it heavily....pitiful that Capcom had unreasonable goals with it :/. A New Darkstalkers would have been well received.
The fighter genre is pretty crowded at the moment. I do think a well done Darkstalkers game would've been cool though. Better than that Killer Instinct crap.
Games like this need a total re imagining. Something that the game companies from Japan are both terrible at and afraid of.
They released a two game pack at $15 with only the bare minimum upgrade. It's the same with Jojo's Bizarre Adventure; how many young people are going to shell out $20 for an old game based on a franchise they don't know? If Capcom made a NEW Darkstalkers, one to rival Street Fighter IV, it would sell. They recognize this for Jojo, as it is getting a new game. Similarly, I cannot help but notice Capcom vs SNK 2 released on the PSN last week with NO MENTION WHATSOEVER from any source. They are TRYING to bury old franchises.
I HATE Greedcom!!
So what if no one bought Ultra Street Fighter 4? Would we not get a Street Fighter 5?...According to their logic,at least. I mean,I know we're going to get one,but still. I'm saying this doesn't make sense.
