The lights are on
At San Diego Comic-Con, we had a chance to sample the latest Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 build. We also had a chance to speak with David Cox, producer on the game, and Robert Carlysle, the voice of Dracula. Today, we've learned on more thing.
In a conversation with Destructoid, Cox indicated that Lords of Shadow 2 will be the final Castlevania from MercurySteam. The studio has been on board for two console games and the 3DS Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate.
"So we’ve told Japan headquarters that this is the last one for us... there’s nothing worse than when somebody’s got something to say, and when they’ve said it, they just keep talking," Cox said. If the previews are any indication, MercurySteam will be leaving the franchise on a high note. We'll know for certain later this year.
Our TakeI thoroughly enjoyed Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and I thought the ending and narrative elements of the DLC (if not the gameplay) were quite interesting. We've been fighting Dracula for so long, that getting a better understanding of him can only enrich the rest of the franchise (both past and future). Should Lords of Shadow 2 live up to our expectations, MercurySteam will prove itself one of the few developers that knows when to stop talking.

That explains why they seem to have went all out with this. That trailer is one of the best trailers I've seen so its clear that they wanted to leave a huge mark on the series before letting it go.
SO THAT EXPLAINS IT...
Good for them. It's nice to know that some people know that stopping on a high note is good. The title makes it sound as though MercurySteam was handing off the series to a new developer and I was sitting there thinking, "It's not their series to hand over!".
I really like MercurySteam... I really enjoyed the Castlevania 3DS game.
Well, let's hope they finish the story at least. There's nothing worse than leaving a story in the middle and then handing it over to a different company to completely different people to finish. I guess we'll see...
I liked Lords of Shadow, but felt it had too many questionable design concepts, and I really enjoyed Mirror of Fate, despite it being a little too shallow in exploration. I'm looking forward to this and hope it gets a Wii U release. Interesting that MercuryStream wants to stop working on the series, but I'm sure they're probably ready to do something else for a while.
They have done nothing, but good by the Castlevania franchise. I'll be sad, that they won't be developing any future installments, but wish them only the best on their future projects. It'll be interesting to see what they'll be working on next.
I applaud MercurySteam for this move. I kind of enjoyed Lords of Shadow but disliked the 3DS game. Lords of Shadow 2 looks good, but I don't know if I wanted to invest in another bunch of entries to that saga.
Stepping away from a franchise on a high note is something that just needs to be done more often by developers, regardless of how good their early works were.
Super excited for this game, and I applaud them for not stretching it out. Hopefully the next game they make is just as good as these.
They definitely will be given another franchise to work on.
So honorable <3 Love this series. Lords of Shadow was a fantastic reboot.
MercurySteam has my undying respect.
It sucks that they wont be continuing with the series, but I am very interested to see what else they can do now that they have helped make these awesome games. Maybe a new IP after LoS 2?
