The lights are on
Pikmin 3's success is an important metric for the Wii U. The console has seen disappointing sales due to a dearth of exciting games, but Pikmin 3 could turn that around.
Pikmin 3 released on Saturday July 13 in Japan, so as of today the game has been available overseas for a full week.
Update: The numbers referenced below for Pikmin 3 cover game sales between July 8 and July 14 in Japan, meaning these numbers only reflect sales that occurred on the game's release date, July 13, and the following day, July 14. [Thanks Stealth for the tip!]
Siliconera is reporting that the game sold 92,720 copies, which is about 48% of its retail allocation. Comparatively, the original Pikmin sold approximately 90,000 copies at launch, and its sequel sold 160,000 copies.
The original Pikmin released on December 2, 2001, a few weeks after the release of the GameCube on November 18. The Wii U released on December 8 in Japan, making the gap between console launch and Pikmin much wider than it was for the original game.
Pikmin 3 is coming to Wii U in North America on August 4. For more on Pikmin 3 you can check out these assorted trailers and videos.

Our TakeThese numbers aren't bad, but they aren't exceptional either. Pikmin 2 selling more copies than 3 at launch is not surprising. It was a sequel to an established franchise on a established console. The former is true, but not the latter for Pikmin 3. The Wii U is still trying to find its balance. It will be interesting to see how the game fares here in the United States.

Not too shabby. Europe has a promotion for getting Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101--somewhat similar to what they did for Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei IV here. I hope they keep that up.
These numbers aren't bad, but it certainly won't be enough for devs to make games for the system. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Pikmin, but in any case, I'm glad to see that this game is selling units.
Also, I highly doubt that the US sales numbers will be as good as this. Hardcore Nintendo fans will pick this game up, but people that don't own the system won't pick the system up for this one game.
Please, don't call me a Nintendo hater, I own a Wiiu and 3DS, and like both of them.
come on, dig some if is not that hard and the math is basic
1) all sales on PK 1 and PK 2 are retail, there were not downloads at that time, while PK we only have retail sales, no idea how many more Online sales were, an people have a reason to buy online, ti was cheaper)
2) PK 1 released on Oct 26 /2001. this is a high sales season, so for a new IP on an console relatively new at that time its logical to have low numbers.
PK 2 released on april 29/2004 but despise not being on a high sales season, its was a sequel and GC userbase had reached its peak to that time.
3) the other important thing about the dates is that if Media Crate always count Monday to sunday weeks.
PK 1 released on a Friday, That means It had 3 days worth of sales.
PK 2 released on Thrusday, That means it had 4 days worth of sales
PK 3 released on Saturday, That means it had 2 days Worth on Sales
so, in really the comparison will be
PK 1: 90K Units in 3 day (30K units per day average)
PK 2: 160K Units in 4 days (40K units per day average)
PK 3: 92K + X Units in 2 days (46K + (X/2) Units per day average)
so if you see, PK 3, will be outselling its previous entries
X = Online sales
Tell me something I don't know ! I'm just can't wait for this game ! I'm seriously considering to take an entire week off just fort this.
Pikmin 3 isn't the system seller that a lot of people think it is. It's a great series but a Metroid or Star Fox game would bring in a lot of fans that are waiting for more than just Mario and Donkey Kong. How Neither of these was shown or announced at E3 is pretty much baffling to me. Iwata needs to be let go and some new management brought in. The WiiU doesn't need sequels to games that have come out recently on the 3ds, like DK and Mario 3d Land, it needs a new Metroid to get the bad taste out of it's mouth. It needs a new entry in the Star Fox series. This isn't rocket science.
Cant wait for Pikmin 3
I've had this game paid for since I pre-ordered my Wii U. To say I'm excited would be the understatement of the century. I love how Nintendo titles typically come out on Sundays. I know what I'll be doing all day on Sunday the 4th. My Gamestop said they probably won't do a midnight release which is a shame. I hope that changes in the next week.
Well I don't think I've seen many people bash Pikmin so I think 'Merica can "git ett dun"
Already got mine pre-ordered. Cannot wait!!!
great to here
Even tho I love Pikmin 1 and 2 I will wait for Wonderful 101. Same game different premise.
