Earthbound Arrives On Wii U Virtual Console Today

by Mike Futter on Jul 18, 2013 at 04:37 AM

Surprise! Classic Super Nintendo RPG Earthbound is arriving on Wii U's Virtual Console today. This fan favorite has been a collector's item in cartridge form, and it seems to be arriving in digital form for North America earlier than we expected.

Earthbound was announced for the Virtual Console back in April with no release date provided. The title will be available for $9.99, which is significantly less than $150 or so you'd need to spend for a cartridge on eBay. The guide that came with the original SNES version of the game will be available online via the Earthbound website, and it's optimized for the Wii U gamepad for use while playing.

Our Take
This is a title well worth investing in. There are no random encounters (enemies are engaged by touching them in the world), weapons are more mundane items like yo-yos and baseball bats, and characters have psychic powers with which they can fight foes. It's charming and offers a compelling story. And now you can play it without breaking the bank.
