Angry Birds Star Wars II Announced, Has Toy Component

by Jeff Cork on Jul 15, 2013 at 04:56 AM

Rovio has officially announced Angry Birds Star Wars II, after teasing it a few days ago. The sequel, which is based on Star Wars episodes I-III, includes new birds, new levels, and the ability to align yourself with the Empire or the Rebellion. The game also features a new Telepods component, which adds a Skylander's-like toy component to the game.

The trailer below shows a little gameplay, as well as a glimpse of how Angry Birds Star Wars II works with a tablet or mobile device to scan in specially designed figures. Players can then customize their Angry Birds roster to suit particular puzzles. Hasbro will be releasing more than 30 of these characters when the game launches on September 19.

Our Take
Parents know what I'm talking about when I say that Angry Birds are nearly impossible to avoid. My boys have gone to at least four Angry Birds-themed birthday parties in the past year, and our house is filled with drawings of the goofy things. Rovio's going to be showing the game off at Comic-Con this week, and I'll definitely be checking it out. If they manage to incorporate figures into a game in a way that isn't exploitative or that blocks off significant chunks of gameplay, I'm fine with it. I suspect my opinion means little in terms of how Rovio views this surefire moneymaker, however.
