The lights are on
In an interview with Gamereactor, Saints Row IV’s design director Scott Phillips spoke briefly about what we can expect from the Saints Row series moving forward.
When Volition created Saints Row: The Third, the designers had to spend resources on making a new engine. According to Phillips, because they’re re-using that tech (with improvements) for Saints Row IV, the team has more time to outshine its already bizarre scenarios.
But how do you top being a super-powered president? Maybe you don’t.
“We’re definitely considering Saints Row IV the end of that saga of this character and the Saints as they are,” Phillips said. “So if there’s any more future Saints Rows – which you know we always hope there will be, we hope there are fans for future games like that – they will probably continue in a different direction.”

Saints Row IV releases on August 20.
Our TakePhillips’ comment could mean anything. Maybe the hypothetical Saints Row V would ditch the over-the-top tone in favor of something more serious. Maybe the open-world environment could be swapped for one more conducive to linear play. We'll have to wait to find out for sure, but I hope Volition doesn't leave its exaggerated brand of comedy behind. We already have a Grand Theft Auto.
see i wonder how 2 would e with the new engine
Here's hoping for Saints Row to go back in a similar direction to Saints Row 2.
I'm of the few that heavily enjoyed Saints Row The Third. I never played the previously ones before getting into the 3rd one but when I bought SR3 i was also given Saints Row 2 free from psn. Having played both I just enjoyed the zany and over-the-top style of the newer game. I understand why people like the older titles, but to me they feel way too close to GTA ( which I love). The direction they have going has more of their own identity imo.
Also, LMAO, the upcoming Saints game has a pre-order bonus of getting the " 'Merica Gun" xD Lost it with that.
wind waker style? lol naqwwww
That's fine, I'm good with a change-up.
Do not like the sound of that but will remain open-minded.
Honestly grounding the games at this point would be a huge mistake. The reason Saints Row was so damn good was that it served as a counterpoint to how tame GTA had become with GTA IV. I hope they mean they're going for a different art direction or a different way with the story.
Yeah, I think a new direction would probably be a good idea. Not necessarily less craziness, just different craziness. As funny and over-the-top as they are, there IS a line where that insanity would stop being legitimate fun and start being kind of annoying.
I just want more than just about anything in the world for Saints 4 to have local co-op. There are just too damn few splitscreen co-op games at all anymore, and none in this genre.
Anymore Saints Row is fine by me.
Well, when the trailer has the narrator say: "the end of the saga", pretty much means...the end of the saga.
Personally I don't care that much what direction they try to go I was never able to get sucked in to any of the Saints games.
Saints Row 5: you play as a rival street gang aiming to knock the Saints out of first place. You can import your Saints Row 4 character to be the leader of the Saints, whom you will eventually confront. Get on it, Volition.
I hope they change some of trashy things they have been showing us.
and yeah, We already have a Grand Theft Auto.
It would be nice for them to go on a more semi-serious tone, I wouldn't mind that... I never played SR or SR2 but I really liked The third... even IV looks good to me, but I wouldn't like them to take the craziness further.
I gravitated to saints row BECAUSE it was the anti-GTA (I love gta but I miss the sense of humor with all these moody self loathing characters). There aren't enough games these days which don't take themselves seriously, I really hope this doesn't pan out to be about them ditching the silly!
I am so glad i stopped at saints row 2 the first time i saw 3 i knew it was gowing to be bad and this is gonna be worse then 3
