The lights are on
We've recieved numerous tips about the story of 19-year-old Justin Carter, a person who has been charged with making "terroristic threats." Some are circulating information that Carter made these threatening statements during or immediately after a League of Legends match. In truth, whether or not he was playing League of Legends has nothing to do with the matter.
The events of the case, which have gathered steam thanks to a community petition started by Carter's family, took place in February. A tip was provided to the Austin, Texas police department after Carter made a threatening statement on another person's Facebook page that stated, "I'm f***ed in the head, alright. I think I'm going to shoot up a kindergarten and watch the blood of the innocent rain down and eat the beating heart of one of them."
According to New Braunfels, Texas police lieutenant John Wells, Austin police issued a warrant for Carter's arrest after discovering that his father lives approximately 100 yards from an elementary school. Carter was apprehended in San Antonio, Texas and is now in New Braunfels on $500,000 bond facing third-degree felony charges. If convicted he will face two to ten years in prison.
Our TakeNormally this wouldn't be the kind of story we run, but given the misconception that Carter's comments were made within a game and that League of Legends had anything to do with this, we felt compelled to dispel the inaccurate information. According to lieutenant Wells, the comments were left on the Facebook page of someone unknown to Carter. Especially following the recent school tragedies, authorities are taking these matters very seriously.

It seems like some people ignore the fact that this guy's Dad lives 100 yards from an elementary school, and since when does saying "lol,jk" get some one off from any consequences. I also doubt that he would get 10 years in prison as well if this is as much as the police have on him.
yay factual reporting. Good for you Game Informer.
um.. there are tons of elementary schools.. when are you not close to an elementary school if living in a populated city? lol My take is that the kid said a stupid comment at the wrong time. I wouldn't be surprised if the kid is in fact mentally disturbed though. Functional people don't make comments like that because it's crazy talk.
For making a statement like that, yeah, I'd say you are pretty screwed up in the head alright. I don't blame them for taking this kind of crap seriously, especially after all the tragedies that had happened. I hope that even with this clarification that people won't blame video games for this. I mean, if you are saying comments like THAT, there was already something wrong with you before you bought that game. I'm a firm believer that that kind of violent behavior doesn't just happen over night and I find it very hard to believe that games would do that to a person, even over a long period of time.
Glad GI put some clarity on this.
stupid cops dont get it sad
"Someone had said something to the effect of 'Oh you're insane, you're crazy, you're messed up in the head,' to which [Justin] replied, 'Oh yeah, I'm real messed up in the head, I'm going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts.'"
"We tried to track down Justin's Facebook account in order to verify what the exact comment was, but we didn't have any luck. Assuming that what his father said is accurate, the kid is doing hard time for making a sarcastic comment. Is it in poor taste? Absolutely, but that doesn't mean that he should serve a prison sentence for making an insensitive, gruesome comment."
so "chances" are this guy didn't really mean it
Psychiatric evaluation with follow ups and house arrest for 9 months maybe, no jail.
