Defense Grid Is Your First Free Games With Gold Title

by Mike Futter on Jul 01, 2013 at 02:45 PM

At E3 2013, Microsoft announced a new program that would deliver two free games per month to Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Two of the titles mentioned were Assassin's Creed 2 and Halo 3. Today, the first title that is officially part of the program (Fable III was available last month) is all yours.

Defense Grid: The Awakening is now free for Xbox Live Gold members (regularly 800 Microsoft points). You can download Defense Grid now for free from Xbox.com or your Xbox 360 dashboard. Move quickly, though. You'll need to claim your game (but not necessarily download it) before July 15.

The good news is that even if you delete the game or drop your Gold membership, you'll continue to have access to these free titles.

Our Take
No, this is not Assassin's Creed 2 or Halo 3, and I've heard from many of you that you're disappointed. I re-watched the relevant part of Microsoft's E3 press conference last night and confirmed that those titles were only mentioned as part of the program. No commitment was made that they'd be the first two. Either way, this isn't the most impressive start for Games with Gold, especially as PlayStation Plus is offering up Battlefield 3 for free tomorrow.
