The lights are on
At E3 2013, Microsoft announced a new program that would deliver two free games per month to Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Two of the titles mentioned were Assassin's Creed 2 and Halo 3. Today, the first title that is officially part of the program (Fable III was available last month) is all yours.
Defense Grid: The Awakening is now free for Xbox Live Gold members (regularly 800 Microsoft points). You can download Defense Grid now for free from Xbox.com or your Xbox 360 dashboard. Move quickly, though. You'll need to claim your game (but not necessarily download it) before July 15.
The good news is that even if you delete the game or drop your Gold membership, you'll continue to have access to these free titles.

Our TakeNo, this is not Assassin's Creed 2 or Halo 3, and I've heard from many of you that you're disappointed. I re-watched the relevant part of Microsoft's E3 press conference last night and confirmed that those titles were only mentioned as part of the program. No commitment was made that they'd be the first two. Either way, this isn't the most impressive start for Games with Gold, especially as PlayStation Plus is offering up Battlefield 3 for free tomorrow.

I'm not ungrateful but compare this to what PS+ is doing and yeah I feel a little bit disappointed.
I wish it was a newer game like PS+ does.
At least I'll get to keep 'em...
the our take on this story nails it. This is not up to par with what Playstation Plus is offering. I had high hopes with Fable 3 leading the charge but this is a terrible followup when PS+ is giving away games like Uncharted 3, XCOM, and Battlefield 3. Microsoft needs to get their message right and this is coming from a big Xbox 360 gamer that wants to like the Xbox One. Get in the game MS.
They are starting slowly just like ps+ did they haven't always given away great games so I can't compare the two, ill reserve judgment to see what the lineup leans toward in the coming months. For now it's a decent start even if not the strongest one.
Strange how the narrative is being shifted by some people now. PS+ was always about the subscription program - that's the point of the premium service. Live has never been about free games in it's 10+ years of existence - it's about the best online experience available.
The free games are just a test until the end of the year and Gold members get to keep those games even if they let their membership lapse, unlike PS+. Apples and Oranges. Live was worth the money before the free games offer - they're just a nice bonus.
I have both services and they're both great, but frankly, Sony had to offer games with the subscription model because their online service simply doesn't match up to Live, so they had to do something different.
Ehh, not the best start to this for Microsoft. Although I do like tower defense games. But on the plus side you won't lose these games when your gold expires or gets dropped.
Can XBOX get much worse? I think so. After 2 PS3 purchases I decided to get an XBOX. It was very skeptical in getting one, Since I plopped 500 bucks on the 2 PS3's I decided to go to XBOX. I coughed out diapers for of money on the XBOX for the exclusives and DLC and bought 3rd party titles. Online connectivity was awesomebut never did XBOX do anything in return. I still had my PS3 with non working blu-ray, so I decided on getting first a 3 month subscription to PS+. Was I ever dissapointed? Not at all. Discounts are awesome with the plus and the free games given a month are well worth it. The only thing is you have to have the subscription which isnt much. 50 bucks a year!!! I dont even play XBOX as before. Just COD Blops 2. Anyone looing for great deals Sony has it. They know their customers and keep them coming.
When I first saw it on Xbox Live, I wanted to write a strongly worded letter to Microsoft, but Defense Grid is actually a very good and fun game. I am playing it right now, while I am typing this, because I don't want to put it down, and yet I have to tell you guys. This game is very fun, and all the alternate modes are great. I would recommend downloading this now.
