The lights are on
It's been a busy week for the Australian Classification Board, the government entity responsible for rating entertainment media. A second title has now been declined classification, even under the new R18+ banner, put into effect at the start of 2013.
State of Decay, Undead Labs' open world zombie survival title won't be making an appearance down under. The board cites the prevalence of drugs found in the title and, more specifically, that they are absolutely crucial to progress through the game. This decision comes on the heels of the refusal to classify Saints Row IV for implied sexual violence due to an "alien anal probe" weapon.
The board cites "drug use related to incentives or rewards" as the ultimate reason for refusing classification. As these decisions start to come down from the Australian Classification Board, the boundaries of even the R18+ rating are coming into focus.

Brb, Moving to america.
This is extreme. I mean really just because it has drugs in the game it gets banned. Your player doesn't become addicted to drugs. It's not like playing this game will lead you to a life time of hard drug abuse.
I am a little disappointed that this won't be officially released in Australia, but I can still play it by logging into my US profile. I don't understand why we have this new R18 classification here and yet it's still refused? Makes no sense to anyone with common sense. Sometimes I picture the Australian Classification Board being comprised of a bunch of 70 year olds in their nursing home... "Oh my Martha, look at this game, it has some kind of drug use! Where did I put my red stamp, help me find my glasses Dorothy, can't have the kids seeing this."
To all the people flaming Australia over this... come on, it's just a video game get over it!! I don't mind loosing out on a couple games here and there to live in the best country in the world! :)
*sigh* we aussies have always struggled with the censors and will continue to.... but we'll never give up and those old people will die sooner anyway
I have an explanation. Australia is such a dangerous place, what with having 10 of the world's most venomous snakes and gigantic spiders and God knows what else on one continent, they don't like to be reminded about the fact that they probably risk death if they live anywhere outside a heavily urbanized area.
Wow, they sure are cracking down
i don't blame them. it's a little obsurd to make a game where taking drugs isn't just a choice, but mandatory to progress. living in a beautiful country like that, playing video games would be the last thing you'd want to do anyways. power to them.
australia continues to suck for this kind of thing.
Coffee and Aspirin, oh my! The other drugs are NOT crucial to finishing the game. So now any game that implements medicine as a way to heal yourself is bad? Well, see ya Left 4 Dead. No more pills for you Louis, you damn junky!
What is the idea of having a +18 rating available, if you just keep ignoring it at leisure?
