[Updated] Free To Play iOS And Android Age Of Empires Will Be A "New Genre Of Strategy Game"

by Kyle Hilliard on Jun 26, 2013 at 04:02 PM

Update: The official Age of Empires Facebook page has offered a small update on the details of the free to play Age of Empires planned for iOS and Android devices.

It doesn't make clear what the game is, or when we will see it, but it makes a pretty bold promise about the game:

"While the Klab Age of Empires game is still early in development, our intentions are to leverage the strength of mobile platforms (including Windows Phone 8 ) as well as Klab’s strengths in that space. This will not be a port of an existing AOE game, but a new genre of strategy game appropriate to the platform and the audience."

Original story:

Microsoft is getting more and more comfortable with competing mobile devices and is partnering with Japanese game developer Klab Inc. to bring games like Age of Empires to iOS and Android. The partnership will bring more Microsoft games to iOS and Android devices.

This isn't the first time Microsoft games will appear on non-Microsoft mobile devices. Games like Kinectimals, Ms. 'Splosion Man, and Wordament, which lets you unlock Xbox Live Achievements, are all available on devices other than the Windows Phone.

Microsoft offered a statement to Polygon detailing Age of Empires for iOS and Android devices:

"Today, KLab Inc. announced a licensing agreement with Microsoft Corp. to develop a mobile version of Microsoft Studio's Age of Empires franchise, which will be initially developed in English for iOS and Android and launched globally, with plans to release the game in other languages and on Windows Phone in the future. Some reports included incorrect information about additional Xbox Live-based games on iOS and Android but there are no further announcements beyond Age of Empires at this time."
