XCOM And Agricola Star In This Week’s Mobile Roundup

by Matt Akers on Jun 21, 2013 at 10:45 AM

In this week’s mobile roundup feature we’ve got another top-notch digital board game, a portable version of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and classic Mickey Mouse. Enjoy.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Developer: Firaxis Games
Platforms: iOS
Price: $19.99

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is an all-around excellent tactical RPG. Originally released in 2012 for PC and consoles, it’s an update to the 1994 strategy game, UFO: Enemy Unknown and subsequent X-COM titles. As of yesterday, it’s available for iOS with an interface that’s been optimized for touch screens. Don’t be put off by the price here; this is a full port of a game that still retails for $30-$40.

Agricola
Developer: Playdek
Platforms: iOS
Price: $6.99

Agricola is currently ranked as the second best board game of all time on BoardGameGeek.com. In case you didn’t know, BoardGameGeek users know their tabletop titles. For those who have never played before, the iOS Agricola app might present a considerable learning curve. There are tutorials, though, and it’s worth it to persevere. Agricola is an outstanding worker management game that translates well to the touch screen.

Where’s My Mickey?
Developer: Disney
Platforms: Android; iOS
Price: $0.99 for phones; $1.99 for tablets

There’s my Mickey. As part of the popular physics-based “Where’s My ___?” series, Mickey has now joined the party on Android and iOS. This entry is probably the most challenging and fun one yet, and even includes animated shorts featuring Mickey Mouse and friends. The XL version available for tablets includes 20 additional levels.

Star Thief
Developer: Bright Night Games
Platforms: iOS
Price: $2.99

Star Thief is a game with a simple premise: touch stars before they exit your screen. That premise becomes much more easily said than done, however, as your task becomes gradually more complex. Warning: There is a free game for Android also called Star Thief. I don’t know what that is, but it’s not associated with the iOS version.

Quadropus Rampage
Developer: Butterscotch Shenanigans
Platforms: Android; iOS
Price: Free

Butterscotch Shenanigans is a two-brother team in St. Louis responsible for such games as Towelfight 2 and Culture Wars. Their latest indie venture is Quadropus Rampage, which they describe as an “endless roguelike brawler.” Amusing humor, fast-paced gameplay, and a healthy dose of randomization make this free title well worth the download.
