Nvidia Drops Price Of Shield, Launch Date Confirmed

by Mike Futter on Jun 20, 2013 at 03:33 AM

Nvidia has responded to consumer concerns over the price of its Android-based handheld, dropping the price this morning. Additionally, the company has announced that it will start shipping the units next week.

When we reported last month that Nvidia was coming to market with its Tegra 4-powered handheld at a price of $349, our readers balked. Even the promise of streaming games from a PC with an Nvidia card wasn't enough to sway them.

Here's a sample of just some of the comments:

I was interested at the initial reveal for this thing, but seeing that price tag makes me want to pass. If I ever wanted to play an overpriced handheld on-the-go, I could just invest in a Vita.

There is nothing unique about the thing that makes it worth that price tag.

This is not for me, especially with that price point.

Nvidia has heard the comments from our readers and others, and now the price has come down to $299. We expect that the price of the PlayStation 4 ($399) may have exerted some pressure on Nvidia.

According to a statement from the company, it believes it has a "home run" with the Shield at the new price point. They'll know for sure when the handheld arrives on June 27. Is $299 low enough to get you interested in the Nvidia Shield? Not sure? Check out our hands on impressions from GDC 2013.
