The lights are on
One more piece of the next-gen pricing puzzle has been clicked into place. Microsoft will be holding retail prices constant at $60. Publishers still have yet to disclose their own plans, though.
This news, which comes by way of Gamespot, should come as a relief to consumers afraid that new hardware would bring a new price tag. When the Playstation 4 was announced, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America Jack Tretton confirmed that the games for that system will range between $.99 and $60.

I wouldn't be against a price increase but just because they don't charge it up front doesn't mean we won't end up paying more.. After all, with DLC and map packs becoming such a regular part of a games life cycle how often will we ever pay just $60.
It seems that DLC and additional paid content is so beneficial to a title that they'll all need to incorporate it to some extent to stay profitable. It's really the only thing that inhibits used game sales; knowing that you'll need to repurchase the game if some great DLC comes along that you'll want to play. The upside for the industry also being that any used game won't come with DLC and will have to be purchased by each individual owner. That is of course if there are enough used copies to buy which may lead to increased new game sales. Then there is always the option to pay all over again for a GOY or similarly named edition including all the content.
As long as the original game is worth the initial price and all the DLC released is solid content it should work out for the best for everyone. Used game buyers and sellers get to keep doing their thing (I don't support it but I get it). The games stay on peoples shelves at home longer which leaves fewer used copies on the store shelves and encourages new game sales. Then there are the DLC sales from each owner of the used game, which if done correctly will gain enough support to offset lost profits from resales. And the best part; we all get more out of the games we love. With longer life cycles we may even start to see multiple campaigns released for single titles or similar major content updates. With developers fighting to keep their disc in the tray (so to speak) everyone with a controller in their hands is a winner.
Bottom Line: Let's not pretend we will be paying only $60 per title. I think it's safe to say those days are gone but if done correctly it will benefit all of us and I'm excited.
I can't believe people complain about $60. Where can you get anywhere from 8 to 100's of hours of quality entertainment for $60? You can barely get lunch for 2 or go to a 2 hour movie with a friend for $60. I'm not sure what world everyone else is living in.. $60 is a tank of gas, 5 beers at a sports event, 1 shoe.. Have you ever tried to buy cartridges for a razor or printer ink? Those are like the 2 most precious commodities on the planet apparently. C'mon people. ESRB says the average age of a game purchaser is 39. Some of us have to have more than an allowance to live off of. And I'm a Disabled Veteran that gets ***, literally they *** on me every month and I can afford my games just fine, never used. Besides being cheap, you get what you pay for. At least take that in to account.
Of course first party games are going to stick around that price point. I'm wondering what the developers are going to do. They can do just about anything they want now.

Pay $90 to play an alpha/beta that will later become a full retail game 6 months in advance!
Ha! please, i couldn't tell you the last time i spent $60 for one game alone! Steam sales are just too awesome
Thank goodness it didn't go up at least. Now that would be just plain unreasonable.
