[Updated] Sony: The Last Of Us Autosave Bug Resolved

by Adam Biessener on Jun 14, 2013 at 07:28 AM

Update: Sony has issued a statement that the problem was in their servers and should be resolved now. Affected players simply need restart their game.

The statement from Sony, in its entirety:

Some players may have been encountering an issue with The Last of Us which affected the autosave feature, which can result in a loss of progress in the single-player campaign. The team at Naughty Dog has been diligently investigating as soon as we heard from our community, and we have determined the cause to be on servers for The Last of Us which were capturing player statistics. We have made a change to ours to address this issue. All players should quit any game in progress out to the XMB and restart The Last of Us. All players can now enjoy single-player and online multiplayer matches as normal.

We will continue to monitor forums and social media, and investigate any other issues that may present themselves.

Hopefully that is the end of it. Let us know in the comments if you encounter any further trouble.

Original Story: Gamers all across the Internet are reporting a terrible bug in The Last of Us: the autosave system can fail, occasionally wiping out all of your progress since your last manual save.

When the start button is pressed, players are reporting seeing the game stuck on “Autosaving, please wait…”  instead of the usual “Autosaved [x] minutes ago” message. This appears to corrupt the entire autosave for your game, forcing a reload to a manual save.

The bug is being widely reported with both physical and digital copies, and both with and without the day-one patch applied.

The remedy seems to be conscientious (if tedious) manual saving at regular intervals. Some players are reporting success by selecting “Load Save” rather than “Continue” from the main menu, so you can try that – but if I were at risk of losing my progress, I’d be taking the conservative route and saving every 5-15 minutes.

This sort of thing is never good news, and it's especially dire when the game itself is living up to the hype. [Note: Game Informer did not encounter this bug during our review of the game.]

We’ve reached out to Sony for comment and will update the story if we hear anything.
