The lights are on
In its first day of sales, Halo 4 amassed $220 million worldwide. But in the past 6 months most of the original players have jumped ship, leaving Halo 4 with fewer players now than Halo Reach had half a year into its own lifecycle according to a recent case study by Raptr.
In an effort to boost the amount of players, 343 Industries developed a series of 10 weekly episodes collectively known as Spartan Ops. While the content was meant to add more story beyond the main campaign to entice players to keep playing, the series has not aided the developer as much as it had hoped. But unlike Halo 4’s solid review scores, the extra content was not received as well.
Part of the problem is the inconsistency in the quality and breadth of the Spartan Ops episodes. Not enough original content was created in the making of the maps and missions are too repetitive to garner replay.
While the sales of Halo 4 were impressive, keeping players entertained enough to continue playing the multiplayer and purchasing DLC long after beating the game is crucial to keeping a title in the public’s interest. Particularly with the used game debates on full blast, keeping a title from getting traded in or sold or put aside means that it is up to the developer to give gamers a solid reason to come back for more.
It has not been announced if a second season of Spartan Ops will be made. Perhaps if the studio follows our recommendations, 343 Industries could bring in more players.
Because 343 took a chance and tried to change something to be more like CoD and people don't want that. CoD is bad enough, if Halo 5 returns to more of a Halo 3ish online versus than I'd bet anything the numbers would sky rocket.
The only time I play is if my friends beg me to come on, but almost none of them play anymore.
I enjoyed the campaign, but I don't think it had as much personality as Bungie's campaigns.
There are a lot of problems with the multiplayer, it's still fun for what it is and it still FEELS like Halo at its core. But there are balance problems, and grenades have been terribly nerfed. Sprint throws of the map designs and unlimited sprint is just a terrible idea. Promethean vision is OP(there are counters to it but the tiered unlock system still make it unfair to newer players).
They've ruined many custom game settings.
And besides the weapon tuning, 343 has hardly been listening to their fans, something that Bungie did very well(I'm one of those people who liked Reach, besides armor lock).
I stopped playing multiplayer in December, haven't it played it again until today when they had the weapon update. I feel like this is why Halo 4 has been unsuccessful to this point. Today's update should have happened a week after launch. But it didn't, the result is the single most inconsistent and hectic Halo multiplayer ever. A lot of the skill previously valuable in playing the game is negated. On top of that, the game types were for the most part lousy and poorly managed. The new capture the flag was pretty bad, flood was a terrible replacement to infection, dominion is not fun, and they completely took out firefight. Weapons were extremely unbalanced and the ability to choose loadouts removed the perfectly equal playing field most veteran Halo players loved. There were simply too many distracting factors to make the game fun to play. I also feel like maps had a huge thing to do with it. Most of the maps on launch were not very memorable and there were very few of them. I swear I have spent 75% of my playing time on Haven. The combination of uninteresting maps, gametypes and gameplay made Halo 4's multiplayer a bust. The campaign was good, but I actually really enjoyed Reach's considering it was a huge fan service and I liked seeing my own spartan in cutscenes. Overall, Halo 4 was kind of underwhelming.
that sucks. the only reason I haven't been playing is because I haven't had Xbox live for a wile but i'm gonna start again this week. maybe more people would play if they raised the level cap and made the armor easier to get, I'm level 130 and have all the armor you get my level the rest seems almost impossible to get and I would play allot more if i thought I could get them.
Haven't had Xbox Live. Can't play. If Xbox Live was more convenient in price, like a 1$ a month maybe, I'd expect more people to play.
Spartan Ops wasn't awful, but when it was taken out in trade from the Horde mode, it paled.
I enjoyed the campaign, but the MP didn't do anything for me and I flipped it in January.
I think this has to do a lot with all the great titles that have been releasing as well. So I'm really not surprised.
that and im sure that since there are a ton of other games to play had something to do with it. attention spans change quickly these days. the content has been good but I stopped playing because I have to much to play.

That was their first big mistake... As cute as Spartan ops is, it's boring to me. It is just more campaign in smaller douses on multiplayer maps; I just don't care about it. I wanted to play an arcade-like hoard mode and rack up points competitively, so I actually started playing Reach again to play Firefight.
Also Halo 4 is a very 'small' game. Very small maps everywhere and little BTB support. I can't say I am a fan. If I wanted a corridor shooter I'd play a corridor shooter.
I think this game will feel massively different once 60 FPS is standard; to me, a big barrier to coming back is how slow and floaty 30 FPS feels in shooters. CoD wisely avoided that, and I think the pace of the gameplay is improved as a result.
Since next-gen consoles will enable this, perhaps the problem will go away with Halo 5.
Until the 1-50 ranking system returns im sad to say my run with Halo has ended iv been disappointed too many times since the release of ODST. Halo 3 will probably be the last great Halo game.
I lost interest in Halo after Halo:Reach the stories are too short and I can't play multi-player like these other guys for 8+ hours a days weeks/months on end. They find every spawn weapon & player spawn point/glitch.
