The lights are on
The development saga of Prey 2 has been a comedy of errors on the scale of Duke Nukem Forever and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. The title was officially announced in March 2011, but since then, none of the news coming out of developer Human Head Studios has been particularly pleasant.
The original Prey, developed by Human Head and published by 2K Games, was innovative in its manipulation of gravity and use of portals (before GladOS ever came on the scene). The sequel was slated to star a new protagonist
Today brings a new rumor that could mean a new start for the beleaguered alien-invasion shooter. Kotaku is reporting a rumor from a vetted source (and echoed by fan site Alien Noire) that Arkane studios has reluctantly started work on Prey 2 from the ground up.
Last April, we reported that the title had possibly been canceled, followed by confirmation from new publisher Bethesda that it had been indefinitely delayed. According to Kotaku, which has a source close to the project, Arkane will be modeling its work after System Shock (also an influence for last year's hit, Dishonored). According to the source, this follows the game briefly being in the hands of Fallout: New Vegas and South Park: The Stick of Truth developer Obsidian.
Arkane has two locations, one in Austin, Texas, and the other in Lyon, France, and Dishonored co-creator Harvey Smith has recently moved to the European branch. Whether the two are connected is unknown, and Bethesda isn't saying.
When asked for comment, the publisher told us, "We don't have any new info to share on Prey 2. We don't comment on rumors."

RIP human head
Well I'll be darned. I recently wrote a blog post examining the game's confused development. I'm really not sure whether this is welcome news. While its great that the game might finally be released, it would be a terrible shame for it to be restarted from the ground up after all the effort that was put into so far. For all appearances, the game seemed to be pretty far along in development. I'd hate to see its creative alien designs, dark environments, and fluid-looking controls put to waste.
It's a shame that Human Head Studios and Bethesda couldn't work out their apparent disagreements, and the project had to be handed off to another studio. Really, this stinks of Bethesda being way to controlling of its relationships with developers.
Thats all well and good, great studio I just hope they keep the art and all that the same. It looked awesome I want to play this game so bad I just don't want it to be too similar to dishonored
I liked the futuristic-dysto-western feeling the trailer for Prey 2 showed everyone. While Arkane did a great job with Dishonored, and I couldn't think of a better developer for the game if I tried, I hope they don't feel that everything from the original build was a lost cause.
Well I hope this is true, the whole concept of Prey 2 was intriguing and seeing how well Arkane performed with Dishonored, this could be the kick that finally gets Prey 2 back on track.
I hope they dont change much from what they have showen. I cant wait to hear if this game gets back into developement and not in some lost game limbo
Good news. I've been looking forward to Prey 2 since I saw the trailer, and I have faith that Arkane will do a fine job.
If it stays being an open world bounty hunter game in some alien world/space station then I am good.
It's a bummer because the e3 demo they had a while back was amazing.
I bet they could really do something with it.
Awesome, but from the ground up? Why restart it? Looked awesome the way it was.
This is the first news about the franchise that has gotten me excited! Arkane is one of my favourite developers, they have yet to disappoint me, and i think this type of a game fits them perfectly. I actually remember thinking that arkane should have been given this in the first place when it was revealed a couple of years ago. I doubt they will make it into an ss clone, they are probably just referring to the rpg elements and the athmosphere.
From the ground up? You mean making a completely different game without using ANY of the assets used in Human Head's Prey 2?
New Prey 2 is going to suck, calling it.
I never knew it was canned at a point in time.
Don't know what to think of this.
I mean, Arkane seems great... although with Dark Messiah and Dishonored, not to mention The Crossing (which just collapsed and disappeared), they don't have a very consistent track record. I'm sure they can put out a great Prey 2 though... or at least, a really interesting failure. A cult classic at worst.
But hearing that Bethesda wants it treated as a "System Shock sequel"? Hearing that some people at Arkane Austin don't want to work on this? Hearing that Obsidian did work on this when we haven't heard about South Park in MONTHS? This sounds like a huge mess.
Also, the original version of Prey 2 seemed really promising. It turned quite a few heads at E3 2011. So why scrap that entire, very promising, idea? I'm sure Bethesda doesn't want to screw this up, and they're one of the best publishers out there. But - let's remember - according to the Kotaku piece, even Rebellion didn't want to touch this. The Rebellion of Rogue Warrior, Rogue Trooper and Aliens VS Predator "fame". If that doesn't say "troubled project", I don't know what does...
Hoping for the best.
