Sony's Kaz Hirai Says PlayStation 4 Is Focused On Games

by Matt Helgeson on May 30, 2013 at 03:43 PM

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai spoke today at the D11 in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. During his remarks, he said that the PlayStation 4 is intended as a game console first and entertainment device second.

"The most important thing we need to make sure we do at least initially is that we all agree and understand that the PS4 is a great video game console that appeals to video gamers. If we miss that part then I don't think we get the initial establishment of the console," said Hirai. "We take a look at this first and foremost as a game console."

However, he said that there will be all the expected entertainment options on the system, as well as more to come: "We don't want to end there. That's an area we will obviously reveal and talk about in the coming months."

These statements can likely be viewed at a not-so-subtle shot at Microsoft, which received criticism for focusing too much on the Xbox One's entertainment and television capabilities during its recent unveiling of the console.
