Microsoft Returning Start Button In Windows 8.1

by Adam Biessener on May 30, 2013 at 08:04 AM

Bowing to popular demand, Microsoft is bringing back the Start button in the first major update to its Windows 8 operating system.

Speaking with The Verge, director of Microsoft’s Windows user experience team Jensen Harris said, “It lends back a little bit of familiarity. It makes the whole PC work the same way.”

Among the many changes coming in Windows 8.1, two other common gripes are being addressed in Windows 8.1. Users can set their PC to boot directly to the desktop instead of the tile-based Modern UI, and can also blend the two paradigms by setting Modern UI to display over the desktop rather than replacing it.

Microsoft is expected to release Windows 8.1 this fall, and though the company has yet to unveil the price most observers expect it to be in line with Apple’s minor-update pricing in the $30 range. Update: Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 8.1 will be a free update for Windows 8 users. Game Informer regrets the error.

Will these changes make you more likely to purchase Windows 8 (or better enjoy your already-upgraded PC), or don’t you foresee them making any difference to you?
