[Updated] Trouble Hits Marvel Heroes, Early Access Now Open For Ultimate Pack Buyers

by Mike Futter on May 29, 2013 at 10:59 AM

Update: Early access is now available for those Marvel Heroes fans that purchased the $200 Ultimate Pack. Things are perfect yet, though. There is a text glitch that inaccurately reports the experience bonus awarded by the ultimate pack (it's properly calculated, though), the exclusive War costume for Hulk isn't quite ready, and any bonus currency users are expecting has not yet been deposited. Ultimate pack holders will be compensated for the lost time, but the details of that make-right haven't been revealed yet.

Original Story:

In the earlier days of this console generation, the two Marvel: Ultimate Alliance titles (preceded by the X-Men Legends games) fulfilled many comic lovers' fantasies. The time since those action RPG titles were popular has been partially filled with anticipation for Gazillion Entertainment's upcoming, Diablo-esque Marvel Heroes.

The title is scheduled to launch on June 4, which would normally give the team a few more days to get the bugs ironed out before launch. In this case, time is already up. As part of the free-to-play model Gazillion is using, players were able to purchase packs of boosts and characters in three different tiers. The top level, which cost $200, awarded those diehards with a week of early access that was supposed to start yesterday.

Yesterday, COO and president David Brevik (one of the minds behind Diablo and Diablo 2) issued a statement informing users of a delay.

Hello everyone,

Today is a big day for everyone on the Marvel Heroes team! We’re in the process of getting ready to put the game live, but it’s going slower than we hoped.

Late last week, we found some serious issues that we felt we could not launch the game with. The entire Marvel Heroes team has been working for the last 96 hours straight to get the game ready. This process is nearly complete and ask for your patience.[sic]

We always want to find these types of potential errors, so we’re glad we had the opportunity to fix them in advance of launch.

We will not leave this studio until you can play the game. We hope this will be in a matter of hours.

For those who purchased Ultimate Packs, we’re working to get the game up and running as soon as possible. We’ll issue updates here as we get them.

We appreciate your understanding.

These days we expect MMOs and other online games to have rocky starts. Leaving the most invested fans without one of the biggest perks of the $200 investment is a terrible way to begin. Gazillion will likely find a way to make this right, but as of now, there are a number of users on the forum that aren't terribly happy.
