[Updated] Sony Confirms Vita Remote Play For PS4 Games Is (Mostly) Mandatory

by Jeff Cork on May 29, 2013 at 06:27 AM

[Update]

Sony president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed what might be the best news Vita owners have heard in months. With the exception of titles that require a camera or other external peripheral, PlayStation 4 games will all utilize remote play.

This could breathe new life into Vita sales, which have been limping almost since the handheld launched.

Sony fans could be rewarded for their loyalty if a recent report pans out. Sony is apparently requiring PlayStation 4 developers to bake in Remote Play functionality for the Vita as well.

According to Eurogamer's Digital Foundry, this mandate extends across all games on the platform, with the exception of titles that require the PS4 Eye.

With Remote Play, players can stream gameplay and video from their console to the Vita. It's a concept that Sony's been tinkering with for years now, but it's looking as though it's going to be a major component of Sony's PS4 push. Unlike past Remote Play experiments, which sapped processing power from the PS3, the PS4 was designed with this kind of functionality in mind. The new console uses Gaikai's tech, which allows for faster streaming between devices.
