The lights are on
The Xbox One will be region locked, only allowing it to play games bought from the country of origin where the console was purchased. It's not surprising, but it's nice to get some kind of confirmation from Microsoft.
A representative from Microsoft shared the details of Xbox One's regional shortcomings with Digital Trends saying, "Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale. We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One.”
With only a few exceptions, all consoles have typically featured some kind of regional locking to prevent the import of games from other countries. The need for such a system mostly has to do with the differing regulations and taxation of media in different countries.

Well, just let's hope the PS4 is not. As i am living in Europe i have quite a few US Games as they often release earlier than the Europe counterpart, even if its just a couple of days and most US versions are cheaper even when i buy them at my retailer in Switzerland.
lol....they are insane...pfffff
The worst console of the year!
The PS3 games don't have region lock, another reason to not buy this piece o ***.
This just gets *** better and better.
This doesn't affect me since I won't be purchasing an X One. This is bound to piss off someone though. Seems like there are going to be a lot of Restrictions to this new system. Maybe that's what they should have named it.
I'm not really suprised about this given everything else we have learned about the console.
This is new? I mean I'm glad GameInformer keeps us up with this stuff but come one.. Kyle even says in the article that is isn't surprising.
Xbox one is only about restrictions not games!
I live in Canada. This article says country only. That means I can't buy games from the U.S??
i always believe that regional lock is the dumbest idea ever...i want to be able to play games from all over the world. i think a region free console help people not pirate or mod their consoles...
And because Companies want to prevent players from getting awesome games that they'll never import anyway.
I hate this system so much already and it isn't even out yet. Wow, I was really turning into a Microsoft fan. Lesson learned.
