The lights are on
The Xbox One will be region locked, only allowing it to play games bought from the country of origin where the console was purchased. It's not surprising, but it's nice to get some kind of confirmation from Microsoft.
A representative from Microsoft shared the details of Xbox One's regional shortcomings with Digital Trends saying, "Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale. We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One.”
With only a few exceptions, all consoles have typically featured some kind of regional locking to prevent the import of games from other countries. The need for such a system mostly has to do with the differing regulations and taxation of media in different countries.

What about people in the Military??
I am not shocked...
I'm a little confused. It says you can only play games from the country in which you bought your console. Does this mean that region locking is getting way more specific and strict and someone like me in Australia will only be able to play Australian versions of the game, as opposed to any Region 4 PAL European games like we've been able to for the last few gens, or was this a bad choice of words on the part of Gameinformer or the Microsoft representative and the old broad North America, Japan, Asia, Europe/Australia regions are still the same?
oh great. another problem.
does not affect me at all.
For those who are saying that it only affects a minority of people, Hello!! Microsoft just make an effort to lock out half of Europe and the rest of Asia from buying their system and playing their games.
I guess if you are Microsoft's first market then you can safely say that all Xbox One games will be released for your region so region lock will not affect you. But for us living in Asian countries, there is a good chance that anything lesser than Halo or Call of Duty may not get released due to concern that it may not sell enough, when it comes to this I always have no problems importing my games from good old Amazon although I paid a hefty shipping charges, I am able to play my games despite it is not released in my region.
Implementing region lock = making extra efforts to block sales
it is unacceptable when their main competitor(Sony) is not doing this. PS3 outsells Xbox 360(by a overwhelmingly large margin) in my country due to it having no region lock and PSVita outsells the 3DS due to it not having region lock, PS4 is going to outsell Xbox One too
Kinda sucks for those traveling abroad.
Why? What possible reason would they have for doing this?
Yeah I'm hating Microsoft right now for doing this ***, PS4 will be f***ing better than this. I'm staying with XBox360, so screw you Microsoft!
