The lights are on
The Xbox One will be region locked, only allowing it to play games bought from the country of origin where the console was purchased. It's not surprising, but it's nice to get some kind of confirmation from Microsoft.
A representative from Microsoft shared the details of Xbox One's regional shortcomings with Digital Trends saying, "Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale. We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One.”
With only a few exceptions, all consoles have typically featured some kind of regional locking to prevent the import of games from other countries. The need for such a system mostly has to do with the differing regulations and taxation of media in different countries.

That sucks, hope there is a work around for this so I can play the Japanese only games.
Did GI really just delete my post?
I wonder how this plays out for people like me that live in Iceland, a country that never got an official launch of the Xbox 360. We have to use the Uk as a country for accounts. And all our games are imported from the Nordic or Uk areas.
GI has got some crazy mods
Ugh there are just some games you have to import thats stupid. Im really thinking of just getting the ps4 if they have it reagion free that is bu im sure they will. The xbox one is starting to look more and more unintresting
Keeping up with all of these X-Box One headlines is crazy. Right after this headline, we'll just hear something contradictory from someone else. I almost won't believe anything that's said about X-Box until people have one on their shelves. . .
this isn't that big of a deal
I gets no respect.
Not really going to be buying foreign games anyways. Not sure I will be buying the Xbox One either. I bought 2 Xbox 360 over the past few years. They both burned out on me and it left a bad taste in my mouth for Xbox. I am looking forward to the PS4 though.
Why region lock? In this day and age when everything is easier to import it just seems stupid. Why do they care if I want to spend more money by importing a game? They are still getting my money, more of it even, since games from Japan cost more than games from the US. Region locking just encourages people to hack their consoles or handhelds to play games from other areas of the world for they don't have to import a console or handheld from another country. This is why I don't have many games for my 360. The ones I want are region locked and Japan only. My PS3 and Vita let me get games from anywhere, and I do.
Well, there go a huge portion of your Australian gamers. After 10 years supporting these clowns I have already decided to jump ship to the PS4 anyway.
Wait, are they talking about different countries or continents? I'm Brazilian and I usually buy games from the US because they are cheaper, they cost me around $70 against the usual $100 that we pay in the retail stores here. If I can't buy from the US, then I won't buy the Xbox One.
You mean no more Japanese games? Dang.
