The lights are on
Yesterday was a big (and at times confusing) day for Microsoft. Some exciting details about the new Xbox One console have come into focus, but there is still much we don't know.
One of the things we learned is that the divide between Xbox Live Arcade, Xbox Live Games on Demand, and Xbox Live Indie Games will disappear (and with it growing brand confusion). Games will all be housed together, and we envision an approach similar to how Valve has structured Steam.
What won't be like Steam though, is how developers will get their content onto Microsoft's Xbox Live service. In an interview with Shack News, Microsoft general manager of Redmond Game Studios and Platforms Matt Booty confirmed that, as of now, developers will still need publisher assistance to get in front of consumers.
This is a departure from how Microsoft's competitors are approaching independent development, with Sony and Nintendo both opening the door to self-publishing. It's important to note that this decision may change between now and the Xbox One launch (and even later as the platform evolves).

Microsoft... Just put the gun down. There's so much to live for! Also, Mat Booty. Teehee.
Sony has them beat in this category as well.
Sony is going to take back the crown for the PS4.
I feel like microsoft is just like "lets pick the worst/ least thought out ideas, then based on all the negative feedback we can figure out if we should make the Kinect better".
This sealed the deal for me to jump ship from MS to Sony.. This is a sad day for a diehard Xbox and Xbox 360 fan and supporter.
Microsoft is shooting themselves in the foot over and over lol. It's like they're trying to screw the new Xbox up
Man, defeats the point of Indie - by making them have to have deals with publishers. Self Publishing is how it should be.
Defeats a bit the point of being an Indie developer. By forcing them to have to use a publisher. Self Publishing is how it should be.
Come to mamma Sony.
Big mistake. If Sony is going to be the place for indie devs, then it's going to be another reason to jump ship for me.
I am not understanding, is their goal to completly alienate people? They are trying to hit Gamestop, independent companies, and fans in the face and still expect us to spend money on their product????
This is why I don't own an Xbox, will never own an Xbox, and will continue to buy games through Steam. I love Indie games, but if Microsoft is going to make it impossible for Indie developers to sell their products, they should go where they are loved most.
I honestly don't understand what is going through Microsoft's head right now. It's not hard to find out what gamers react negatively to, but it looks like they aim to piss of the entire gamer community.
I think that this will end at least with the Xbox One not being sold in Japan at all...
