The lights are on
The Kinect is a key component to the Xbox One, and it will be required to run the system.
IGN reports that it talked to Microsoft UK marketing director, Harvey Eagle, who said, "Kinect does require to be connected to Xbox One in all
During the system's reveal, Microsoft walked through just how integrated the peripheral was to the experience.

IGN got it wrong. The Kinect has to be attached to work but Kinect doesn't have to be attached for the Xbox to work. IGN is the Fox News of videogame journalism. I'm surprised GI just rehashed this incorrect story.
Gramatically speaking this only means Kinect requires the Xbox One in order to function, not vice versa
What if the Kinect breaks after months of using it? Is it covered by the warranty or do you have to buy another one? As far as I know, controllers aren't in the warranty.
The Xbox One launch was great. People that are trying to pick fault with it must have too much time on their hands.
Sure, there could be some things that don't appeal to you so much but what's so wrong with that?
A solid presentation, an actual look at the console, details on the tech, a few bits on games....all good.
E3 will give us even more.
So now I HAVE to buy that crap? Damn.
This is pretty crazy. Every accessory that is available for any console should be optional. There should only be 3 thing you need to enjoy a console. 1)The console 2)The controller 3)The game. That is the end of the story. Options is the key work here and when a company starts to force its consumers in a predetermined direction I consider it criminal and down right wrong. Even if all the systems come with the device it should still be 100% optional.
You know MS listens to in to Skype calls and reads attachments, right? What will they do with a mandatory always-on Kinect? I can just imagine this thing spying on you 24/7... it creeps me the hell out.
This is just stupid. I'm guessing that all the developers will also have to have some sort of kinect support in the game they're making too.
I made my decision today. I will buy the PS4. Microsoft hit all the wrong nails, in order to not buy one. : (
So now we have to keep $100+ saved up in case it accidentally breaks since we can't do anything without it.
This is almost as bad as a required internet connection....
SO if you break it you're screwed?
Well I guess rather than focusing on making the kinect fun or useful in more than a few isolated games/cases, you can force its popularity on the masses by requiring everyone to buy & use one.
Can't wait to see the next generation of kinect commands that don't work.
hopefully i can just use my controller to navigate the dash cause id hate to be forced to talk to my xbox all the time and use gestures also i have a small bedroom and i dont care to be jumping around or waving my hands in games it gets old i bought the kinect day one used it for a month and never used it again just like ps move bought it and quit using it after a month of having it i had the wii also but they had games that made it fun only games i didnt like was games that made you hold and swing it like a sword for the entire game
Always Kinect(d)? Pass.....
The big freakin deal is that the Kinect is a POS and I'm not about to gamble my money an "upgraded kinect". For example, if the Kinect turns out to be even a little buggy, it will affect the users entire ability to navigate. That little detail could be infuriating when applied reality. For a console to only rely on one way of navigating is ridiculous. The controller should be an option. Just like a remote.
Money money money. Money
