The lights are on
The Guilty Gear series has been quiet since its last release in 2009 with Guilty Gear 2: Overture. Today, Arc System Works announced a new entry into the series with Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-.
You can check out the trailer below, which showcases some of the franchise's always excellent animation and visuals. The characters appear to have received a redesign, with Sol Badguy in particular looking quite a bit bulkier than he has in the past.
The video is light on details, but you do get to see the game in action. Check it out below.

I'm excited. That trailer looked pretty sweet.
Awesome, even with the strange name.
Saw this on Youtube this morning. I love Guilty Gears!
Well I am ecstatic about this....great way to start my afternoon.
How is it that nobody is speaking of how seamless the fusion of 2D and 3D is here!? This is the best cel-shading I've ever seen! It literally looks like an anime at points! The Naruto games on PS3 did a good job, but this stepped it up! Holy cow man...
Even though games like Skullgirls and KOF XIII have raised the bar for high res, gorgeously animated sprites, this looks AMAZING! And confusing - the use of Unreal Engine for one. Sure, the backgrounds are 3D. That I get. But there's this more dynamic camera... and that 360 shot (@ about 1:03) where the sprites became 3D, cel shaded, models (PERFECTLY matched up to the 2D art too!). What is going on with these sprites and this tech? It looks jaw-dropping! Is it the same process as KOF XIII, where they make 3D cel shaded models, and then draw over them to create the sprites? Whatever it is, it's working!
I know 3D models can look as good as hand-drawn; just look at Cyber Connect's Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm games... or Disney's Paperman short. 3D is getting really good at emulating 2D. Whatever Arc is doing here, it's definitely a leap beyond what they did in Hard Corps: Uprising, Persona Arena and Blazblue. I'm excited here.
I just hope some Japanese studios have been looking at what NetherRealm has done in the past with MK's Challenge Tower and Injustice's Star Labs modes. There's a lot of content there for single-player gamers; something Japanese fighters have traditionally ignored.
This looks radical. Happy 25th Anniversary Arc! Didn't know you were so old! :)
So, are the character models 3D? The game looks awesome, i've been waiting for a new guilty gear for a while. I hope the story mode is really good. The new Mortal Kombat game raised my expectations of story arcs in fighting games.
No blazblue but this is a great substitute. can't wait to play my old favorite Fighter in a new title. LETS ROCK!
So not only am i excited to play ChronoPhantasma (assuming that it will be brought over) and the fact that a new BlazBlue anime has just been announced, but now I have this new Guilty Gear game to look forward too.
Looks like it could be fun. Never played any of the titles, but man...I just realized how not a fan of the anime look I am. Some are fine, but when the men start to look like women, that's kinda where I draw the line.
One of my favorite fighting series of all time!! SOOOO many classic battles between my friends. I absolutely will get this on day one!!
