Google Introduces Cross-Platform Services For Its Play Platform

by Mike Futter on May 16, 2013 at 07:05 AM

At yesterday's Google I/O event, the search giant announced the availability of new services for Android and iOS game developers. The new Google Play Game Services seeks to rival Apple's Game Center in the Cupertino company's own devices.

Google Play Game Services introduces a leaderboard and achievement system closer to the now-defunct OpenFeint rather than Apple's Game Center, which functions as a separate app. Login is handled through Google+, which has the potential to significantly enhance usership. Google Play Game Services will also include enhanced piracy checks, addressing a major barrier to Android publishing. On Android, the service will include multiplayer and voice chat for up to four players. This includes Android-based devices like Nvidia's Shield and others that include Google Play.

A small number of games are already using the platform. Notable inclusions are World of Goo and Kingdom Rush.
