The lights are on
Precursor Games has succeeded in launching a Kickstarter campaign for Shadow of the Eternals despite the company's location in Canada. Kickstarter has not before worked north of our border, making this even more newsworthy.
When the campaign for the spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem launched last week, I expressed a hefty amount of skepticism about the project. Having a Kickstarter campaign does provide much-needed oversight, but it does introduce some fundamental discrepancies. Originally, Precursor Games suggested that the funding goal is flexible, and that money would only be returned to backers if key staff didn't feel that completion was possible.
Kickstarter doesn't allow that flexibility (Indiegogo does, though), which means Precursor is locked into its $1.5 million goal. The funding amount combines the over $150,000 raised through the developer's own efforts and the $1.35 million Kickstarter effort. There are still mismatches between the goal, which supports the first episode only, and backer tiers starting at $25 that offer multiple installments.
We've reached out to Kickstarter to get clarification on whether this project heralds a change in geographic policy for the crowd-funding platform.
Update: Kickstarter responded to our inquiry pointing us toward their eligibility requirements, which have not changed to include Canada. A representative directed us toward Precursor Games (which we have contacted) stating, "Regarding who on their team meets those requirements, that's really a question to pose to them." Our understanding is that the company's legal incorporation in Canada does not preclude it from using Kickstarter if a single, qualifying individual meets the eligibility criteria. We have asked Precursor Games to explain to us how they navigated the process.

This seems very shady. I see this whole thing ending very badly. But that's just me.
Dyack will screw this up. DO NOT FUND THIS GAME!!!!!
LOL + for the PC version always ends up being cheap on PC
I'll buy the game when it releases, but that's the only support I'm giving this game.
