The lights are on
It’s Mother’s Day. You didn’t forget, did you? Mothers don’t make frequent appearances in video games, but when they do, they always leave a lasting impression. Whether it was Crono’s mother waking him up in the beginning of Chrono Trigger, the namesake of the Earthbound series in Japan (the series is called Mother in Japan), the brief and mysterious appearance of Mario's mother in Yoshi's Island, or the end boss of The Binding of Isaac, mothers are important.
One of my favorite video game mothers is Samara from the Mass Effect series. She’s part of your party in Mass Effect 2, and plays an important role in Mass Effect 3. She has three daughters, all of which have the unfortunate genetic condition of killing their mates. Samara gives up all of her worldly possessions and swears herself to the code to become a Justicar so that she can stop one of her daughters from killing. In Mass Effect 3 we meet her other two daughters who have voluntarily isolated themselves in order to prevent themselves from becoming murderers. She’s a powerful woman who clearly loves her daughters, something I can relate to very easily (the having a daughter part, not the being a powerful woman part, for anyone who was confused).
How about you? What video game mothers have left a lasting impression on you? Who are some of your favorites?

favorite (if you take it literally): amaterasu from okami.
least favorite: house of the devil overkill. ew. just...ew.
I just got finished playing Dragon quest 5 ad in that your mom plays a small character and the scene where your main character meets his mom is moving . Also you have a wife and children . Your wife takes on the role of being your childrens' mother and it is an interesting bond.
GlaDOS from Portal. Seriously, she's a great mother!
Kind of obscure, but Yuki's mom, Miranda, from Grandia III. The two were more like siblings than anything. Hell, Yuki never even bothered calling her 'mom.'
Mother Brain from Metroid. Definitely.
Mother Boss in Turok 2.
I love you, Kyle, for mentioning Mario's mom in Yoshi's Island.
I have no idea. I can't think of any video game mom's right now :(
Jenova. She is everything in final fantasy 7. She is the calamity from the sky that destroyed the cetra. Her cells curupted the unborn sepheroth. Hojo's experiments with her blood drove him to madness, and created the reunion of her cells. That's important because its what ties all people with her cells to be called together. Cloud is drawn to sepheroth not by choice in the beginning, but called to him to hand deliver the black materia to him in the promised land. The only place where it could be used to destroy the world.
I'm gonna have to go with the Big Sis prinny in Disgaea 1. When I finally figured it out (because I'm a bit dense sometimes) I almost cried.
The soldier Mother from Medal of Honor. That scene in Warfighter was heartbreaking.
Definitely the empress from Dishonored and the little boys mom from Metro 2033! Oh, and Connor's mom in AC3.
I love Samara. What an awesome mother. I'm really partial to awesome moms in fiction since I have an awesome mom.
If only there was a way to replace her default outfit like the other female characters. It doesn't fit her personality.
Hey another awesome videogame mom is Nina Williams from Tekken...except she's actually a terrible mom. She didn't even know she had a son!
