The lights are on
In what may finally lay to rest the pernicious "always online" rumor, Microsoft has sent an internal memo to staff that addresses the oft-speculated upon feature. According to the missive, features including single-player gaming and Blu-ray playback will "just work" regardless of connection status.
Included in the list of items that users expect to function without an internet connection (according to Microsoft) is the ability to watch live television. We previously reported on the possibility of Microsoft seeing the new Xbox as a cable box replacement or enhancement. The memo seems to indicate that to be true.
We'll know for sure as early as May 21, 2013, when Microsoft reveals its plans for next generation.

We can only wait...
Honestly, even if the next-gen Xbox was "always online" I would've still bought it, though I understand how much of a major turn-off that would be for millions of people. But we can't be sure until the 21st. The inability to play used games because of watermarks? Now that is a deal breaker.
Everybody and their brother are running out of the woodwork now
"I called it! It was me! I knew they weren't going always online! I knew! Give me a cookie! Oh, man.. Yes me!
First of all, most people on the site were riled by the sheer possibility of it.
Second, how stupid are you going to feel when at the very end of M$'s unveil, they're like "Oh, and it's always online required.." and run off stage?
Does work. Don't fix what ain't broken.
hey makes no difference to me i was gonna buy it anyway
My conspriacy theory is that guy who told gamers to STFU about "always on-line" wasn't actually a guy but a clever troll by Microsoft to see how the public would react to an always-connected console.
I'm more curious about the cable box feature. What exactly will it be? Will it be just an extension of your current cable provider? Or will you actually be able to purchase cable through your XBOX? If it's an extension your cable provider and really only allows you to DVR shows or pull up an "On Demand" feature... then it's pointless to me and probably a lot of you. My cable boxes already have the DVR feature and I already have On Demand. Hopefully my questions are answered in a couple of weeks.
Good news. Now i can go back to consider the new xbox as my next console. Will have to wait for exclusives now...
Good news I suppose. I still smell back pedaling in a way. I still want to see more at the reveal on the 21st. Also some other rumors I've heard about both consoles having in game ads put to rest and the used game debate thrown out.
big whoop i am going to get both ps4 and new xbox like most any way most get two so what is the big whoop if xbox or ps4 is cooler we will get both any way right? maybe wii u .... no ps4 and xbox LOL
Good a home console shouldn't have always on, if I wanna play my games offline I should be able to, so good.
I certainly hope this turns out to be true, no console should be always on.
