Metroid Meets Gradius And More In Delightful Indie Game

by Jeff Cork on Apr 24, 2013 at 08:27 AM

Kickstarter is becoming a feeding ground for larger and larger game projects from already established developers, which is why I like to see that games like A.N.N.E. still have a shot (read our hands-on preview here). Judging from the pitch and its accompanying trailer, A.N.N.E. is also a rarity in that there appears to be more substance to it than just old-school visuals.

Gameplay is divided in two halves. In on-ship sections, players fly around a 2D world, blasting enemies and hauling objects with some kind of gravity leash. These objects can be flung around the world, creating cover or stepping stones, or toggling switches. When an area is safe, players can descend onto the planet's surface and explore on foot. If it tickles the same brainspace that Super Metroid and other classics occupy, it's not a coincidence.

A.N.N.E. is being developed by Gamesbymo, which is essentially a one-man shop with animation and music support. He's looking to raise $70,000 to complete the PC version. Additional stretch goals will push the game on to other platforms, including Mac, Ouya, PSN, and the Wii U. It's definitely worth a look. If you do visit the Kickstarter page, be sure to scroll down and check out the incentives for pledging $75 and up. Adorable!
