The lights are on
Starting next week, it's going to take a little less time to navigate your Wii U. During this morning's Nintendo Direct presentation, president Satoru Iwata shared details about next week's planned Wii U system update.
A number of convenience improvements and features are on the menu, with faster loading and transition times coming. Additionally, Wii U owners will soon be able to move data between external USB drives, automatically install downloaded software (currently requiring manual intervention), update software automatically, and put the console into standby without terminating downloads.
The Wii menu will be accessible directly upon booting up by holding the B button on the GamePad, but those that access that emulation for the virtual console will be glad to know that a Wii U version of that service is on the way. Coming next week after the system update, gamers will be able to play classic titles in new ways.
Off-screen mode will be enabled for all Wii U Virtual Console games, which is an enormous improvement. Additionally, each of those titles will have a Miiverse community.
The bad news is that Wii Virtual Console titles will not transfer to the new Wii U service. If you want to take advantage of the functionality, you'll need to pony up another $1 per NES title and $1.50 per SNES title. No explanation was given for the upgrade charge, and it seems that only a select number of titles will be available at the start. Game Boy Advance and Nintendo 64 titles will be coming in the future. No mention was made of the other platforms that were featured on the Wii's Virtual Console.

Well that's good news.
Wow, just wow.
Wow, Nintendo actually announced something good for Wii U in the near future. I'm excited to see some old GBA titles for sale on the VC. I just hope they're good choices. I would LOVE to play the Golden Sun games again, especially on a bigger screen!
Woah there, Mike. I'm glad not all of GI's readers are blind sheep, or you'd have started a whole new Nintendo flame war.
All virtual console games can already be played on the Wii U. They're upgrading these games to take advantage of new features, and they're not even asking you to buy them again, simply pay a small fee.
i neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed to get a wii u but my parents wont buy it until the price drops i told em about the basic 1 but im still stuck waiting for it to drop might as well wait for the wii v or ouya or something
I swear before the Wii U was released they said that the plan was to update the VC games and charge around $1 for upgrading them... I saw no surprise I the charge. Very excited for all of this. Auto-update is one f my favorite features of PS+ and downloading new games in sleep mode sounds great.
Sounds good to me; the thought of playing games like Super Mario World and A Link to the Past on my gamepad sounds super cool.
Buying them again sucks, but at least it's cheap. No harm done I guess.
Now if only GameCube games could be added to the Virtual COnsole, I would truly impressed.
- Eternal Darkness
- Mario Sunshine
Good games in general.
