The lights are on
Based on tons of hype, magazine covers, and positive reviews, I bought the original Tomb Raider in 1996. I wanted to love it, but just couldn't get into its gameplay for some reason. Despite trying each subsequent title and reviewing a few back in college, I continuously struggled with enjoying the Crystal Dynamics franchise. When I heard about the reboot the series would be receiving this year, I immediately became interested. Maybe this would be the one that finally got me on board. Sure enough, I'm several hours in and absolutely loving the new game.
Do you have a similar experience with a franchise? Was there a series that you couldn't enjoy until one particular sequel or reboot turned you around? Or did the opposite happen...you loved a franchise, only to be turned off by a disappointing installment?

Gta 4. I always thought of the series as just a game for *** and giggles, purely for having fun killing people. But then I bought gta 4 and I got super into the story. So well written. Now I have a greater appreciation for the past gtas and am looking forward to gta 5! 3 character narrative and back to san andreas!
bioshock 2 was a disappointment but i liked infinite, max payne 3 was good and got me into the series, but i still haven't played the previous ones, as a hardcore gears fan, judgment was a really huge let down, they should've just kept the multiplayer the same and just added the new weapons and characters (why the f*ck did you think taking out locusts in multiplayer would be smart!!!!!) the new tomb raider was good but does not have much replay value, the new devil may cry game is amazing to me, i like it much better than the old ones, resident evil 5 got me into the series, far cry 3 got me into the series, and the new need for speed most wanted got me back into the series after not liking a few previous installments. I still just can't wrap my head around why they would take out the original car customization from the old most wanted and carbon, i looooved need for speed carbon
A rare opinion, but for me it was RE5, it was what made me get I to RE and want to revisit the series.
I played RE2 back in the day but was not a fan, mainly as I didn't care for the genre at the time. I played a bit of 0 but I didn't have a lot of access to the gamecube so I couldn't play much. I bout RE5 gold for $15 second hand and decided to try it, and I enjoyed it for what it was. After hearing about the hate it garnered, I backtracked through the series and appreciate it at much more. It's not often that a core line of games in a franchise change its play style so drastically and still remain relevant.
As much as people will go "you're doing it wrong", Resident Evil 6 was the first Resident Evil to really interest me. Likewise, I didn't really like the Dead Space 2 demo, but I gave the original a shot on a friend's PC and got hooked ever since.
I still like classic Tomb Raider more. Too much hand holding in this game makes the experience boring.
I was never really into the Devil May Cry franchise, but the new one has sparked my interest and I look forward to playing it.
never played a tomb raider game till the newest one, will be playing the next one, played all metal gear games until the 4th one, shut it off at the way long and boring cutscene at the beginning. never played might and magic, checked out the puzzle type game and now might check out the new dungeon crawler one coming out because of that. neve rplayed a dues ex game but really enjoyed the last one, will get the next one. lots of other stuff too
I have never been a huge RPG fan which means I skip a lot of really excellent experiences. My brother-in-law convinced me to try Mass Effect 3 and I liked it enough to go back and buy 1 & 2.
i was bored by AC1 and the combined effort of AC2 and Brotherhood made me in love with the series AC revelations was just the same as Brotherhood in my opinion but AC3 was a huge disappointment as far as the story and characters were concerned. but the gameplay was the only thing going and i just have to hope that AC4 blackflag will 'reboot' my passion for the series
the last COD game i truly loved was MW2 and the others after that have been terrible
and surprisingly gta4 has actually made me dislike the gta series a little but i am still intending to pick up gta 5
