Capcom To Slow Down On HD Fighting Remakes

by Matthew Kato on Apr 09, 2013 at 04:59 AM

Fans generally love it when a company re-releases one of its titles with snazzy HD graphics and extras, but Capcom says that this practice can't continue for every game.

In a thread on the official Capcom forums, senior vice president Christian Svensson explained some of the company's plans for digital re-releases of old titles, HD remakes, and the digital release of titles from the current generation.

Speaking specifically about more Capcom HD remakes, Svensson said, "Sadly, I think we've probably run the course of feasible titles here given the drop-off we've seen in sales with each new introduction. It seems the novelty of such projects is wearing off even within just the fighting game community based upon the sales data of our last two launches." Capcom's last two HD fighting remakes were Darkstalkers Resurrection and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure HD.

While these last two titles aren't household names, Capcom knows there is a fine line between giving fans what they want and abusing the situation.

Svensson also said that re-releasing old PlayStation, PS2, etc. games digitally can be tough due to the approval filters any game would have to go through such as external licensing, emulation, etc.

Finally, the executive said that Capcom is working to bring current-gen titles to the digital realm, but on the PS3 in particular, this can be difficult. However, "It's being done as a matter of the planned development on all forthcoming titles."
