The lights are on
Only two weeks have passed since BioShock Infinite arrived to critical acclaim. As the world whispers about the fates of Booker DeWitt and Elizabeth (so as not to spoil the ending for others), another surprise twist has emerged. Vice president of development, Rod Fergusson, announced today that he'll be departing the studio in the near future.
Fergusson, who spent over seven years at Gears of War developer Epic, joined the Irrational team to see Bioshock Infinite finished. The title's development cycle had a number of bumps in the road, including the departure of key staff members, multiple delays, and the elimination of multiplayer. We reached out to Irrational and 2K Games for more information, and they provided this statement from Fergusson,
“Obviously this is not something that I was planning to discuss publicly yet, but since you already seem to be in the know, here’s what I can tell you. During my departure from Epic, I learned that Irrational was in need of a “closer” to help finish BioShock Infinite. I’ve been striving for better storytelling in the games I’ve worked on and I saw this as a great opportunity to learn from Ken and his team on how to build a truly story-driven game.
I am very proud of the work that I did and of the team and what they were able to accomplish on Infinite. Now with the game shipped successfully, I’ve accomplished what I set out to do here and now I’m looking at the next chapter in my life and career.”
Game Informer has had the opportunity to speak with Fergusson on a number of topics, including the first game he ever worked on. You can stroll down memory lane with us in the video below.

I wish him the best of luck.
If I was him, I'd never leave Ken Levine's side. The man's a genius, and all game developers could take a little note from him. But I wish Mr. Fergusson the best of luck in his future endeavors.
Best of luck, hope to see him create his own game with a "great" storyline.
Rod Fergusson is smart when it comes to attaching himself to great games apparently. Gears of War 3 was amazing, as was Bioshock Infinite. Basically, whatever game he works on next... will be amazing!
Like a stolen kill.
Well darn. He had a good run though.
i actually forgot he was at irrational
Good luck in your career!
Good guy. Never a bad idea to move around to learn more from experts! Plus, look at is freaking resume! The Gears franchise, Bioshock Infinite... What's next for him? Wish him the best of luck in all his future endeavors.
it seems like a strange maneuver, however i admire his willingness to go new places and try new things (and succeed).
Wonder where he will go next.
Rod is one of the most talented people in the business.
