[Updated] "American Pie" Closes Out Rock Band's DLC

[Update] With the release of Don Mclean's "American Pie" today, Harmonix's streak of updating Rock Band with new DLC will come to an end at 281 weeks. Over 130 million songs have been sold through the Rock Band store since its launch in 2007. Here's to a job well done by Harmonix.

[Original Story]

It's hard to believe it, but the April 2 batch of Rock Band DLC is the final one Harmonix is releasing. That makes the selection all the more appropriate. Don McLean's classic track "American Pie" is known not only for its length (more than eight minutes), but for its cryptic lyrics. Now you can enjoy the former while deciphering the latter in Rock Band.

American Pie is a long tune, but it's not the longest that the series has seen. You'd be forgiven for guessing the B-52's "Roam," but that one only feels as though it drags on forever. The titleholder is Rush, for its "2112." That sucker was 20 minutes and 27 seconds of dystopian Canadian prog rock.

Rock Band's been a big part of gaming since it was released in 2007 – with more than 280 installments of uninterrupted weekly DLC. The game's started countless house parties and stretched many of those on for too long as well. Everyone has their own stories to share, but one thing was universal: The drummer always screwed up the menus when they first sat down and pounded out a random beat. Oh well.

Do you have any thoughts on the end of the Rock Band era (as we know it)? Are there any favorite tunes or stories that come to mind? Any plans for a last hurrah with your former bandmates? Let us know in the comments.
