Fire Emblem Developers Promise More Ankles In Future Releases

by Kyle Hilliard on Apr 02, 2013 at 04:11 PM

Fire Emblem's character models have odd feet, and in a recent interview between the North American localization team and the Japanese developers, we find out why, along with a number of other Fire Emblem tidbits. In regard to the feet, this is what Awakening's Toshiyuki Kusakihara had to say:

"The idea was to add a unique sort of deformation to the characters. As for why it ended up like this... At the start of the project, we weren't entirely sure how many bones and joints we'd be able to use in each character model. As it is now, there's a joint at the knees, and then there's nothing below that for the ankles and the feet. This makes it a bit easier to apply animation to models as well. We found out afterward that, with the 3DS, we had more than enough CPU strength available to flesh out the models a bit, add real ankles and so on. We were like 'Well, if there's a next time, maybe there'll be more ankles…'"

The development team also talked about the internal debate over whether or not to include casual mode (which prevents player permadeath), how the planet Mars was suggested as a setting, and how marriage seemed like an absurd idea initially.

For our own thoughts on the game, check out our review.
