Ubisoft Launches Throwback Website, Trailer For Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon

by Jeff Marchiafava on Apr 01, 2013 at 08:11 AM

The newest information for Ubisoft's rumored, '80s-themed spinoff of Far Cry 3 has us questioning the developer's sanity.

The gaudy, neon-infused website for Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon harkens back to the early days of the Internet, and teases a game that seems too good to be true for fans of '80s action movies. Here's the description of the game from the site:

The year is 2007. It is the future. Earth has been ravaged by a nuclear war and new paths for peace must be found. A U.S. cyborg army may have found a solution: a powerful bioweapon on a distant island. A Mark IV Cyber Commando, Sergeant Rex Power Colt has been sent over to gather information and figure out what the hell is going on.

The site also contains a mock interview with the writer/director of a film version of Blood Dragon, some sample songs from the soundtrack, and a Konami code Easter egg that reveals an image of a character with glowing eyes and what appears to be an omega symbol on his chest.

While today is April 1, we're hesitant to write Blood Dragon off as a joke, as rumors and leaks for the project have been popping up for almost a month. In early March, Far Cry 3 writer Jeffrey Yohalem stated that he's working on a Far Cry 3-related project that "will be surprising" to fans when it's announced. On the same day, a Brazilian Classification Board posting was found for Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Last week two more Blood Dragon leaks were spotted, in the form of an Achievements list that hinted at it being a standalone XBLA game, and potential box art. Either this is the most complex April Fools' Day joke we've ever seen, or Ubisoft truly has something insane in the works for Far Cry 3 fans. We're definitely hoping it's the latter. Here's the teaser trailer:
