The lights are on
Tomb Raider released with the best first week sales of any game in the franchise. So far, it has also had the biggest opening of 2013. Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher and creative director Noah Hughes shared Tomb Raider's sales numbers recently at a panel at GDC.
Square Enix's now former CEO, Yoichi Wada, recently stepped down from the company citing poor sales of games like Hitman: Absolution, Sleeping Dogs, and Tomb Raider.
Hughes told Joystiq, when asked about Square Enix's insistence that the game was not performing well, "Certainly we're proud of what we achieved, and I think for the most part, the whole organization is happy with what we did." Gallagher said, "Actuals and expectations, I guess, are two slightly different things. What I'm telling you is the actuals, and they're communicating expectations."
As of March 26, Tomb Raider had sold 3.4 millions copies. Tomb Raider released on March 5.

Wat game developers need to start realizing is that if they wanna start making more moneyis they hav to stop trying to compete with others and start selling their games wen no other AAA titles r gonna be released.Speaking frm myself..ive been buying every game that i want on release date. Thanks to a good steady job i have..But im starting to slow dwn on that cuz i only get to enjoy these games on the weekend n am one of those ppl that dnt like to start another game until i hav completed one..In these past few months ive completed alot of the newest games cuz i wanted to finish sum more than others..im barely gonna start far cry 3..n although i finished gow ascension n others first n still hav others lying around in plastic..this is wat they need to consider before making ppl step dwn frm their positions cuz they didnt hit their number..not many ppl are as fortunate to hav a good paying job or can afford how expensive this gaming luxury is wen we all hav bills..slow dwn developers..n u will see the numbers.
So...Square was looking for Tomb Raider to beat Call of Duty or something?
I'm now dying to know what their expectations actually were.
And they fired the main sales rep why??????
a game I want to get now..
So, not performing well to squeenix, means they consider it a disappointment as it didn't dig squeenix out of their abysmal hole they dug for themselves.
Still need to get it :/
Wow, Square Enix are a bunch of asses. At least he did't have to commit ritual suicide.
I know it's bad for the company, but it'd rock if stuff like this actually split Square and Enix at long last and we could finally see Enix make awesome Final Fantasy titles again. Maybe that'd ensure that we'd get Final Fantasy XV in an awesome and timely manner. . .
I haven't had this much fun in a third person shooter since "Red Dead Redemption" and "Alan Wake". Not to mention I had a blast moving through the levels and just enjoying the scale of the island!!! I also loved the cover system, I'm so tired of the snap-to mechanic found in games like "GOW" and the like. It's about time someone did it right!!! I found myself centering the camera and saying "Bead" before pulling the aim and fire buttons at the same time ti "Blind Fire" my targets in the head from a good 50+ yards!!! If the single player isn't enough to leave you feeling the game, the multi-player should be enough to finish you off. It's one of the best games of 2013 for me!!! ^_^
I will be buying this game really soon. It looks awesome!
I have tomb Raider and have played a little of it to know it is one sweet piece of candy. The controls and visuals are awesome. I'm in the
middle of playing BF3, next up is Tomb Raider. It will not disappoint i can assure you of that.
What a ***. The first Mass Effect only sold a total of 3.some million and look what happened for that series, selling now over 10 million. Tomb Raider sold 3.4 million within a month. A month. Give it some f**king time.
Buy this, for full price or used, totally worth it. Played it for 5 hours straight one day, thought I was coming to the end... MIND BLOWN cuz WAIT there's more! Truly great game.
This what happens when you make what want, willing and able to buy... simple economics. Good job Crystal Dynamics.
I bet certain former CEO must be kicking himself in the pants right about now. :P
Now if only they would put this kind of attention into a new Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver game. Reboot/Remake. I'm ready for either!
Gonna try to knock out some of my massive backlog so I can go and buy this game in the next few weeks. Gonna make sure I buy it new as to support the developers.
