The lights are on
According to a report based on leaked Xbox development
documents published at the website The Verge, users will be required to
install disc-based games on the next Xbox's hard drive.
The Verge report is based on leaked documents that were
published on VGLeaks.com. In the documentation sent out to developers,
Microsoft states, "Durango consoles will have a Blu-ray Disc drive. Disc media
will be used for distribution, but during gameplay, games will not use content
from the optical disc. An installation system is being designed that will allow
gamers to begin playing while the game is being installed on the hard drive
rather than waiting until installation is complete."
Another part of the document says that Durango "will always
maintain a network connection so that the console software and games are always
Both these facts are leading to further speculation about the
possibility that the next Xbox will have "always-on" DRM and could potentially
lock out used games from being used on the system, something that industry analyst
Michael Pachter doesn't think will happen.
One thing that's important to note: these documents are over
a year old and it's possible that Microsoft's plans for the system could have

I still refuse to believe those rumors. But where there's smoke there's fire...
Goodbye Micrsoft, hello Sony.
Just a Rumor this is highly unlikely....
Over 10 years.
That's how long I've been playing Xbox and been a fanboy. If they do that, I will not buy it, I won't even think about it for a second. *** you M$.
I will not be buying one if this ends up being true.....
I've been teetering between which to buy: new Xbox or ps4.... this would tip the scales and I would refuse to buy from microsoft if this ended up being true
Everybody who is freacking out do you not realize that these are rumors my god, people are going crazy over nothing.
Let's hope they have changed because things don't sound good for Microsoft's stance in the console wars if this is true.
It'd better have a HUGE hard drive right away if it's install only. And what happens if it goes always-on internet and say your internet gets killed for whatever reason? You're screwed from playing until you cn get your intrnet fixed? That will alienate a lot of gamers if they do that.
I don't really like that idea. Even if it isn't true I can't see myself getting a new Xbox. Maybe years after its release but not year 1. My current Box is just an expensive dust collector. I do like having all the current consoles though. I'm going to need to be more than blown away by its unveiling, and this rumor cannot be true.
"Another part of the document says that Durango "will always maintain a network connection so that the console software and games are always current."
Like how SimCity needs to be connected, right?
Nothing but bad things coming from Microsoft lol...PS4 and Wii U rumors are true so imma believe the Xbox rumors too.
I hate these rumors because some (probably a lot actually) people see them and just assume that they'll turn out to be true and dismiss the whole console. Regardless of what comes out to be true and what comes out to be false, there will be a lot of misconceptions that hurt the consoles hype because of all the rumors.
That being said, I appreciate that GameInformer makes it very clear when they're reporting on a rumor, that it is indeed a rumor. Far too many websites leave the word "rumor" out of their headline, and since a lot of people only skim over news without reading full articles, they just assume the article is fact. So thank you for the good reporting GI.
hmm it doesnt matter to me, because the only games i get are good and those i install anyways :P
