Richard Garriott Clarifies Comments On Game Designers

Over the last few days, Richard Garriott (the Ultima creator also known as Lord British) has been taken to task for his comments in an interview in which he said "most game designers really suck." Garriott made the controversial comments in an interview with PC Gamer. As you might expect, he then experienced a rather high degree of criticism both from gamers and other game designers on Twitter and on various blogs, forums, and websites.

Today, he released a statement that attempts to clarify, but not completely back away from his controversial statement in PC Gamer, which was: ""But other than a few exceptions, like Chris Roberts, I've met virtually no one in our industry who I think is close to as good a game designer as I am. I'm not saying that because I think I'm so brilliant. What I'm saying is, I think most game designers really just suck, and I think there's a reason why."

In his statement, released on the website of his company Portalarium, he said: "Wow did I strike a nerve! In the midst of a much longer more contextual conversation, PC Gamer noted "Wow, you just gave me my headline!" At that moment, I knew to brace for an out of context backlash. Without the broader real time discussion, as often happens, much can be made out of partial thoughts used as headlines of comments meant as quipping simplification of complex issues, as was the recent case for me. The variations of headlines where I either disparage others, or glorify myself are inaccurate representations of the intent of my full commentary.

However, he still does seem to think there is a problem with design in the game industry:

"Artists can take classes and create portfolios of their work and an employer knows they can do the work. A programmer can take classes and produce code samples to prove the same. For designers, there are now at least a few good schools like the Guildhall at SMU, that turn out quality designers. Yet these quality designers remain a rare breed. Sadly, I really do think that most people who get into design roles on a team have no more skills at design than the programmers and artists. They may not be worse, but they rarely have better training than the others to tackle the hardest job of all, determining what game is going to be built."

Recently, Garriott's Kickstarter project, Shroud of the Avatar: Foresaken Virtues passed the $1 million mark in funding on the popular crowdfunding site.

• Good game designers are a rare breed because EA just plain ruins everything it touches and Activision runs them into the ground with CoD.

(my first, first comment)
• That is definitely a bold statement. However, I think I get the gist of what he is saying. Basically what I'm reading is that there are just not that many educated, qualified designers out there. It could have been worded better, but I think I get what he is saying.
• Can we get a clarification on the clarification? I can't see where the quotes are.

Anyway, to Lord British and Chris Roberts I would suggest leaving the political comments to your PR team. If you don't have one, then don't share your assessments of other game designers... just make your game.

I love Ultima VI; and Privateer was way ahead of its time.

Make more games and fewer press releases. Thank you.
• Well, he DID say "most." That's kinda true. As long as he didn't name names I suppose. . . (EA, hint, hint.)
• Trying to do damage control because everyone thinks you're a jerk? Yeah, yeah. Guess what? You STILL sound like a jerk!!! He reminds me of a bully in school. Its like he's saying; "WHOA! WHOA! Let me explain why everyone sucks! But I don't suck!". Get outta here, man.
• He probably also thinks that the person that took that photo did a good job... -.-

I know it's completely irrelevant, but that photo is bad on so many levels.

EDIT: Has he actually made any game in the last decade? Just curious. If not, I like how he thinks that he can make something that will compete in today's market. After nostalgia/loyalty passes, I'd be curious to see if his stuff will have a decent lifespan.
• I get his point-that being experienced in various areas of game development doesn't mean you know how to blend different aspects into good overall projects-but his statement still comes off as incredibly arrogant.
• I don't think there is any way to say that without sounding like a total (lower-case) Dick. While I think he is right, that doesn't mean he isn't a total *** for going straight out and saying (I'm paraphrasing here, obviously) "A bunch of people who love what they do, just really suck at their jobs and are the worst. They are literally the Hitlers of the game industry. And I, I am your savior". While he may be right, there are dozens of terribly designed games for every half-way decent one, it isn't something that he really needs to go out and say, especially when he isn't doing anything to fix the problem.
• Urgh. People who say stuff like this to begin with are just ignorant and stupid. There doesn't seem to be any shortage of good games, and did they all come from a few designers who don't suck? Quit talking out of your a**.
• ... Sure
• To be fair Richard Garriot is very talented but I think he could have been clearer. Ultima VII still holds up.

• He made a very unfortunate statement, but in all truth, Richard and Chris Roberts (Wing Commander series) are OUTSTANDING designers; Ultima VII is still one of the best, most beatiful RPGs out there. Are there bad game designers? Yes. Most of them? Probably, but I am not sure... To me, the worst challenge our beloved industry is facing right now is dealing with greedy, pernicious publishers. That are a lot of mediocre and so-so games coming out, and even good games too, but very few outstanding games. We are bombarded with DLC that are not always good (not to mention DLC that should have been part of the game from the start). Richard has a great background. He's allowed to say *** like that. And so was John Romero back in the 90s, who said players should get ready to be his 'biiietch' and ultimately released a shi*ty game (which ruined his reputation). Whew! That was a long comment... anyway, Lord British is now under the spotlight. He better give us a pretty good game after saying that.
• His comment wasn't really taken out of context at all. At the end of the day, he is still a condescending, arrogant man who should learn to be a bit more modest for the sake of the gaming industry.
• See this? This is David Cage in a few years. Ultima was really pretensious crappy mmo but thanks gamers for letting me use you like a condom and taking your money so I can fire everyone and go to space. Even worse you gave a million more dollars for what ever fantasy hes craving now you *** morons.
• How can you take that comment out of context?

• I understand what he's saying and I don't think it's really that controversial. Much like most situations, people just love getting mad about things without knowing the context.
• Says the multimillionaire who had to ask for money to make a game
• with games like god of war, uncharted, mass effect and gears of war, the walkig dead, and many other games that have been game of the year, and this *** says this? you're a *** for saying it because with all of the games mentioned, the games came out pretty damn good from my perspective...shut up and keep quiet if you're going to down great game designers...
• this guy hasnt been relevant in ages. hes full of hot air and ***. he can *** off with this sort of attitude. if he thinks all game designers "just suck" he must not have played any games in the past 20 yrs.
• Ah yes the age old clarify my statement. No your original comments are pretty clear Garriott. The fact is you haven't done anything good for a long time, and you keep clinging to your past as if it where your present. Even if you where at the top of your game it isn't ok to bash other developers.
