Crytek Says Upcoming Console Generation Will Be Closer To PC Development

Crytek's CEO and president Cevat Yerli says that the next generation of consoles will have much more in common with traditional PC development, giving PC focused developers the upper-hand in creating games when compared to developers of the current generation who focus solely on developing for consoles.

In an interview with Official Xbox Magazine, Yerli said, "I think the next console generation is going to be more a mix of the top devs - they'll be much more PC-driven this time around. In fact, I believe - oh, I can't talk more about that. Let's say this: PC devs will be much more comfortable than last gen console devs."

Yerli went on to say that it has been difficult for PC focused developers to adjust their technology for consoles in the past, but this time it should be much easier. He also continued to stop himself short as he tried to talk about the upcoming generation without spoiling any secrets.

  • Guess that's cool

    I guess

  • Makes sense. Wasn't that one of the huge selling points of the PS4, that it's architecture was so close to that of a PC?
  • Hopefully this means that console players will not get the short end of the stick like they did with BF3's 32 player console maps vs. 64 player pc maps.
  • As a PC gamer, this makes me extremely happy.
  • So basically what they are saying is what we have known for a while now.

  • No more excuses for *** pc ports... I'm looking at you Dark Souls.
  • This makes me sad. I like the different feels of consoles and PC.
  • We know.

    F yeah, PC gaming.

  • good...would love to the play pc only games like star wars old republic and diablo, but i didn't have a powerful pc...good thing diablo 3 is coming to the ps4 and hopefully the old republic gets ported too...
  • Well... yeah. Judging by the PS4 specs and rumored Next-Box, consoles won't be traditional, but will essentially be game/brand focused pc rigs.

  • Nope, the PS4 is already outdated, the CPU is lowend (AMD CPU's are pretty bad) and the GPU is low-mid tier GG sony
  • Says the guy who went from PC dev to console dev.
  • maybe ill save my money for the pc to see how the new consoles do. I want to play mmo games like, WOW, The Old Republic, and the Elder Scrolls Online. If these new consoles can do that, then i'll buy one, but if not i'm gonna invest in a good pc that can and will probably have a longer life span than a console
  • I want a console with Microsoft/Sony licensed hardware upgrades.
  • Consoles are always the lead development platforms for games, so designs like control mapping, UI and more are all optimized for Couch Gaming. Moreover PC's often get outsourced PC ports, which is usually half baked (Dark Souls) and/or delayed (Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil). More often than not games drain so much resources simply because it's not optimized (Saints Row 2). This is incredibly good news to me, hopefully this will allow developers to allocate more resources to PC versions and in turn, increase sale numbers.
  • Woot! Woot! All aboard the PC vs Console train!
  • This is exciting. I can't wait to see the potential of these devs pushed even more now.

  • As always, Crytek stating things that are obvious.

I loved when they got mad because Crisis 3 didn't get so many great reviews.

  • "Now thanks to obvious statements we can obvious statements because more obvious statements."

    Really, this is their CEO?

  • I'm guessing more PC games on consoles. That + awesome console developers means more games for console owners, cause I dont see the likes of naughty dog and such jumping to the PC. More games for us!!
