Saints Row IV Isn't Coming To Wii U

Deep Silver revealed Saints Row IV to the world this morning, showing off a trailer for the game and providing an August release date. In the press release, the company said the game was coming out on current-generation consoles. We've gotten a bit of clarification on that item.

We asked Deep Silver if the Wii U counted as a current-gen console in their eyes, and got a solid "nope" in response. Nintendo fans can either take that as a compliment – they're in the next hardware generation already – or a slight. Regardless, they're going to have to sit this one out – at least for the foreseeable future.

  • Ouch. Burned again. These types of things just keep happening for the WiiU.
  • Another big loss for the Wii U.

  • No Saints Row games exist on any Nintendo platforms so I don't know if this could be considered a loss so much as business as usual.
  • Another one... Man, Nintendo needs to step up their third part game. They can keep doing this and expect to make loads of money. It just won't happen.
  • There we go again - Nintendo will never be able to produce sufficiently many high-quality games in-house to compete with all the titles that third party developers offer on PS3 and XBox360. And I'm afraid that things will look even more grim when PS4 and XBox720 launch.
  • Jeez, Nintendo goes out of their way to make an HD system, with hardware that supposedly surpasses the ps3/360, and better internet than the Wii had, and still companies continue to push it off.
  • A lot of people already guessed that the Wii U's release, which was too far between the current and "next" gen could possibly be detrimental to it. It's too new and powerful for this gen, and will be old and outdated when the next Xbox and PS4 release at presumably close together timeframes. PS3 suffered a similar issue with missing the prefect timing for launch, and although they were successful in the long run, they suffered at first. Deep silver kind of confirms this. Developers who are interested in cross platform games are skipping over it. I fear the same will happen when the next Sony and Microsoft systems hit. The Wii U seems like a cool console, but odd launch timing, poor advertising, and a questionable software launch seem to be doing it a lot of harm. Hopefully Nintendo can resolve the issue.
  • Probably not a terrible loss, such a mediocre series at best. But, paints a bleak 3rd party picture for the U doesn't it?! Still doesn't matter, just like the 3DS the Wii U will get it's own unique library of must play games, just maybe not the games hitting other consoles.
  • its all about the money
  • The real reason is "because it probably won't sell until Nintendo gets more of it's own big guns out and sell more consoles".

  • Would be cool but have other games I'll be playing anyways. Could be ported in the future, devs will flip flop this one.

  • Said it before and I'll say it again you cant survive in the west with just a Wii/ds the Japanese just don't send enough stuff over. Developers over here just don't have the interest to port their games either. If I just had a wii u and my 3ds I'd miss out on loads of my favourite games. Like Skyrim, Dragon Age, Metro 2033 and Gears of War. It wouldn't matter as much if we got most of the stuff the Japanese get, but we don't so their console sales will suffer.

Despite owning two of my top five franchises Zelda and pokemon, Nintendo will always make my second wheel consoles. And I wish this weren't true, so I hope Nintendo starts to ship the good stuff over here.

  • Poor Wii U. It seems to be stuck in limbo. The list of games that aren't going to the system is starting to surpass the ones that are.

  • Saints Row is dumb as heck. I don't care that it's a popular series - that just means there are a lot of dumb people out there. I don't even want it on PS3, 360 and PC - Nintendo owners should feel lucky. This is from Volition for chrissakes! They're better than this lowest common denominator sh**! They gave us Freespace and Red Faction and Descent.
  • It could also be due to the fact that Deep Silver just purchased the franchise from THQ. Anything that was currently in development when the franchises were sold will probably stay the course of the original plan set forth by THQ. This in no way makes Deep Silver anti WiiU.

This in no way makes Deep Silver anti WiiU. Changing course with a newly acquired developer could have a destabilizing affect on the new partnership. So good business sense would be to get these current projects shipped in good working order. Then if Deep Silver wants to change the marketing strategy of a developer or a new game they can do so without the challenge of shifting mid-course.

    That's my $0.02

  • This is another one of those games that I don't think would have thrived on the Wii-U. I know that more games = good but this isn't really a big loss. If you played Saints Row 1-3 you obviously have a PS360 so why would you buy the Wii-U version or get a Wii-U to play SR4? The Wii-U needs new franchises and reboots, not the 3rd and 4th games in a series, other than GTA V of course.
  • That's Bulls***

I thought that the Wii U was supposed to be getting these Hardcore games now. Come on guys! Show a little support! The 360 and PS3 aren't the only consoles that can have good "M" rated games.

  • I know about the business side of things, and how this probably wouldn't sell too well on Wii U, but sometimes I wonder if these devs have an axe to grind with Nintendo or something. I mean, is a straight port really THAT much of a risk? Most devs just seem unwilling to give Nintendo a chance, even though they're trying to change.
  • Hmmm... I don't think that many gamers would've even bought it for Wii U. I mean... I woulda bought it for Wii U but I think I would've been of the very few who actually bought it. But you know what? Wind Waker HD is coming!!! Must I say more? I don't think so.
  • WiiU owners can still look forward to Aliens: Coloinal marines
