Hideo Kojima Posits Pilot Episodes For The Next Generation Of Video Games

In an interview with Edge magazine, Hideo Kojima (creator of the Metal Gear series), talks about next generation game development and brings up the idea that it may be closer to television development.

In response to the question about whether or not development team size and costs will expand with the next generation of gaming consoles, Kojima said, "I think there’s a different way of tackling this problem: something similar to a TV series, where you can use pilot episodes to test the waters before you jump completely into the project… It can be distributed via download channels, so the player can try it out before production continues. Something like that wouldn’t take that long to create, maybe a year, and if it’s successful, you can continue."

A year of development still sounds like a lot of time and money to put into a project that may or may not continue, but Kojima has been successful in the world of video game development, so I tend to believe he knows what he's talking about. What do you think of this "testing the waters" idea?
