The lights are on
Maxis general manager Lucy Bradshaw says that SimCity's launch problems are close to being over.
In an email, Bradshaw says: "I had hoped
to issue an 'All-Clear' tonight, but there are still some elements coming
together. Tonight and tomorrow we'll be monitoring each server and gameplay
metrics to ensure that the service remains strong and game is playing great. We
need a few more days of data before we can assure you that the problem is
completely solved and the game is running at 100 percent."
Apart from working on the problem, Maxis and EA have been offering players a free downloadable game for their troubles.

I'm sure it's a great game. I would love to buy it. But again my problem is the big "EA" stamped on the cover. They just ruined so many games for me, and after the customer service I got when my account got hacked I no longer buy EA games. I loved the sims, (maxis made) they ruined that. Loved battlefield 2142, they ruined BF3. I mean come on guys they were the worst company of the year for a reason. Their greed has made me lose their trust. I'm sure im not the only one.
Funny, now that the servers are semi-stable (still can't access some cities, they say "not available now" and sit in an eternal load screen)the bugs are starting to manifest. Most aren't game breaking, but they sure are region crippling. I'd recommend holding off on purchasing this game for quite a bit longer...

I wanted to get this game at launch, but (thankfully?) my pay schedule prevented me. Now, I'm not so sure I wish to purchase this game. Maybe I will take another look at it in 2014, but for now, i'm putting this game behind me and looking forward to Starbound instead.
A lesson to developers of games like this: Test, test, then test your games again. Make sure all the issues are confirmed as clear before launch. If you refuse to do this, you'll have SimCity on your hands.

Unfortunately, I still won't purchase the game. I don't believe in always online DRM for games that are functionally a single-player game. It's great that there are multiplayer components and it makes a lot of sense that there would be but I still believe that there should be an option to play offline. Sometimes, I don't want to share my experiences with people. Sometimes you just want to play single-player. And I think it's short-sighted and ignorant that companies feel that they should not give that option to players because of their fear of piracy.
I believe that companies don't do enough research to figure out if piracy is the actual issue for lower sales. Tom Ford, Former Creative Director of Gucci, stated the following: "And we found after much research that… actually not much research, quite simple research… that the counterfeit customer was not our customer." Pirates would never have purchased the game in the first place, so why implement tools that only harm the paying customer's experience?
Not only that, you also hinder innovation and longevity by disabling the ability for fans to mod. Skyrim is still one of the top games played & purchased on Steam because (a) it's a great game and (b) there is a wealth of free downloadable content created by the fans. What's fantastic is that Bethesda understood this and even gave out the tools to create user content for FREE. And they continue to reap their rewards for embracing this component of gaming. And guess what… there are pirated versions of Skyrim. I know because I've seen them and Skyrim is still selling well today even though it released November 2011 (1 year and 4 months ago).
There have been a lot of people trying to support EA recently due to the hate that they receive from gamers. I can honestly say that I’ve disagreed with EA’s practices for quite a long time. Probably within the range of 7-8 years so this is not a bandwagon thing for me. I know quite a few people that used to work at EA and the one thing that EA likes to do is push out games before they are ready. Instead of taking hints from other successful publishers like Rock Star and Take-Two Interactive, EA continues to believe that releasing a game in a certain time frame is better than delaying it and finishing the game. How much would it have cost you to give the developers a few more months? Was it worth ruining the game for fans, destroying the credibility of a studio you own, and dealing with the PR nightmare created because of the game’s bugs & incompletion?
This has been the main reason I generally refuse to buy EA games. I never feel that they produce quality games or that they care about their developers or consumers. Instead of blaming this practice on loss of sales, they blame piracy and used games. And now, they’ve added another reason for me to not purchase a game.
Unfortunately, for them, I’m a gamer that buys a LOT of games. My household typically buys about 2 games a month. And we typically buy new. I only buy used if the game is out of print. So by doing this practice, EA effectively lost two sales of a game that my husband & I would have loved to play.

And then servers crash all over again as the people who waited for servers to become stable flood them, thus crashing them all again.

Yes, I admit the server issues with this game are horrible. And yes there have been several times when I couldn't play it (including right now actually?). But this is still an awesome game and I'm not boycotting EA. Hopefully they learned a lesson though.
