SimCity Almost In the Clear

Maxis general manager Lucy Bradshaw says that SimCity's launch problems are close to being over.

In an email, Bradshaw says: "I had hoped to issue an 'All-Clear' tonight, but there are still some elements coming together. Tonight and tomorrow we'll be monitoring each server and gameplay metrics to ensure that the service remains strong and game is playing great. We need a few more days of data before we can assure you that the problem is completely solved and the game is running at 100 percent."

Apart from working on the problem, Maxis and EA have been offering players a free downloadable game for their troubles.

  • Well, sounds like I can finally go ahead and install the game.
  • GI should do a follow up statistics check of games like SimCity and Diablo3 to see how a crap launch affects the game's success overall.
  • I've been playing it a little bit and it is a damn good game once you get to actually play it. As a more casual player of Sim games, this game appeals to me a lot more than SC4.

I hope they sort out their problems quickly so I can start a game proper.
  • Hope that includes Cheetah Speed's Return

  • That's great news!!

  • Wow, so many problems.  Did any one expect this launch to go well, honestly?

  • Still not buying this game unless you can play it offline. What happens when they shut down the servers?
  • As much as I hate to throw around EA-hate, this entire situation could have been avoided with offline single-player. Always-online is just not a viable option yet, there are too many inconsistencies in service quality (not to mention the fact that when the servers are turned off the game is unplayable forever).
  • I'm waiting until there's an all-clear from EA and Maxis, and from reviewers. Once the results trickle down to people like GI, I'll head out and get this. Playing it very safe for now.
  • People should boycott it like the plague due to that stupid DRM
  • Yeah, don't care. If I can't play offline and am forced to either play with other people or manage multiple cities myself, then I ain't getting it.
  • I'm confused at how they can say that (famous last words, by the way) when while playing, it doesn't even FEEL like everything is solved. I.E. the region sharing never seems to be working properly. For instance, gifts take an unknown, seemingly random amount of time to be received, shared vehicles don't seem to be in the correct number, issues with resource purchasing keep dipping below even causing problems with your infrastructure, and sim commuting seems completely random.

That, and one of my cities whose focus was on recycling had my recycling center completely stop working - it just wouldn't process the material anymore, causing my entire city to grind to a halt. Oh, and my high tech industry (or even one gear low tech) seems to randomly have issues not finding qualified workers and shut down.

    Yeah, it's nearly fixed alright..

And don't get me started on their "tutorial." There are so many opaque and completely mysterious systems going on that you either have to dig around to find out, or you're left completely on your own. It's funny how there's an "online manual" link from the splash page and it opens a picture of the 2 page keyboard shortcut insert. Thanks guys..

Also, it's humorous how people continually comment on the always-online and multiple cities thing. Kicking a dead horse, guys. Just don't buy it then, but stop complaining :p
  • that damage is already done ,  i hope in the future they and other companies are less stupid.

  • Now the real problems begain

  • Yay!

  • That is good news. I am still not going to buy it because of the always-online DRM (and the fact that my computer can't handle it), but it's nice to hear that the issues will finally be fixed. I'm just going to buy SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition on Steam after I get some money and it gets a price drop.
  • It's still insulting how bad this game got at launch.  EA sure as hell had better learned their lesson, if they pull that always online DRM *** again they deserve every bit of flak they get.  It's funny when the actual DEVELOPERS don't want always online DRM but EA forces it on them anyway.

  • I imagine this complete disaster cost EA/Maxis more having some awful DRM on it compared to protecting the game from pirates.
  • still a +1 for offline settings.. i wont be picking it up unless they do that. Sorry .. that was a bad move in my opinion.
