The lights are on
Update: EA has further knocked down rumors about Dead Space's grim future with an updated statement.
"These rumors are patently false," an EA spokesperson said in an official statement. "While we have not released sales data for Dead Space 3, we are proud of the game and it continues to be an important IP to EA."
Original story: Dead Space 3's attempt at bringing in more players by tweaking the horror/action balance seems to have failed. And if the rumors are true, that failure holds direct consequences for the series' future.
Videogamer.com, citing an anonymous source, is reporting that EA has canceled the unannounced Dead Space 4. The game was in the preproduction phase at Visceral's California offices, with help from a small team at Visceral Montreal. EA closed the latter studio a few weeks ago.
Dead Space 3 was yet another polarizing game, with players both praising and criticizing the series' turn away from survival horror toward action. Players had strong reactions to the game's use of microtransactions, as well. Whatever the reason, the rumor says that the title did not pull in numbers that EA felt like bragging about. Official sales numbers have not been released.
"While we have not announced sales data for Dead Space 3, we are proud of the game and it remains important IP for EA," a spokesperson for EA told us.

odd, but i dont know if it is true.
People wonder why the FPS genre is killing off innovation in the video game industry. Growing up, it was never about 'AAA games' or how many explosions were on screen. It was about being engaged and not having a happy trigger finger. Most games today restrict exploration and force you down a long hallway with scripted events that yank control from you constantly.
The line between 'video' and 'game' has officially diminished.
They hit the awkward middle ground. Shame. It was an awesome series.
WHO THE *** SAW THAT COMNIG? *** EVERYBODY SERIOUSLY ANYONE WHOS GETS BOUGHT BY EA OR ACTIVISION SHOULD JUST *** QUIT CAUSE THEY'RE GONNA GET *** ANYWAY. DEVS ARE LIKE CONDOMS YOU *** THEM THEN THROW THEM AWAY TOO BAD THERES NO UNION TO STOP THIS ***.
Oh wow, this is very unsettling and disappointing. F you, EA. :(
Maybe they should just use a mixture of the first game along with the second and then quickly finish off the series with a fourth/fifth installment before the majority of fans get bored with it or give up on it like with Silent Hill or Resident Evil.
GOOD!!! Hopefully Visceral and EA will learn that watering down a franchise to make more money is cowardly and ***. This has made my day. DS3 sucked. We don't want building sized monsters, massive weapons, same old situation for the same protagonist and poor horror and survival elements. Go back to DS1 principles and give us a proper DS game or a new IP of which is similar.
Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Crysis and now Dead Space. EA strikes again.
Doubt it. They haven't milked the cow dry.
There was an update, the rumor was false.
I love Dead Space 3 and maybe, just maybe, if Dead Space 4 isn't canceled then I'd be excited 'cause there's nothing wrong with more Dead Space!
Video games are a democracy. You just happen to vote with your money. Not enough people voted for Dead Space 3. I am okay with this. I just hope that Visceral stays afloat and creates a great new franchise.
I thought DS3 was great. I love the game. But the more action-y direction would have killed DS4 anyways. Even in DS3 it seemed like you were better off with more firepower than strategic dismemberment most of the time.
