Rumor: Could Someone Other Than David Hayter Voice Solid Snake?

David Hayter is the gruffy, smoke-addled voice of Solid Snake. At least he has been for the last 15 years. How would you feel if someone else voiced Metal Gear's iconic protagonist?

Hayter, who also helped write screenplays for movies like X-Men and Watchmen, recently tweeted, "Informal Poll: How would you react if I didn't play Snake in the next Metal Gear?"

It's entirely speculative, but could this mean that Hayter hasn't secured the role for Snake in Kojima's next Metal Gear game? Could Kojima be looking for someone other than Hayter to play the lead role in Ground Zeroes? We don't know, and this is entirely speculative, but something seems fishy about Hayter recent poll. According to the actor, 64 percent of people told him that they would be sad or angry if he didn't play Snake. The strangest part of these tweets, to us, is the fact that Hayter included series creator Hideo Kojima and publisher Konami in the tweet, which makes it seem like he wanted them to see how much people love him as Snake.

We reached out to Konami for a statement, but they said, "We can’t comment on anything related to Metal Gear Ground Zeroes at this time."

Splinter Cell hero Sam Fisher recently found a new voice, so this kind of thing isn't totally unheard of. How would you feel if Konami found a new actor to portray Solid Snake?

  • snaaaaaaaake seriously tho he IS snake. dont do it hideo!
  • David Hayter for life!

  • David Hayter is Snake.
  • I'd still play the game, but I honestly think it'd be missing part of what makes the series so good. David Hayter's voicework brings so much to Snake's character, but if he wants to go do something else, I won't be the guy to try to stop him.

  • !
  • Count me in with being sad. I wouldn't be angry if he chooses not to but if reasons against him voicing Snake were stupid, sure. He's probably my favorite voice in gaming.

  • Nah...

  • I had this horrible feeling that it would be that guy from Bulletstorm. Ew
  • It would suck ¬¬

I don't think this is about completely recasting Snake. I think it's more about when Richard Doyle (who voiced Big Boss in MGS 4) takes over. For Peace Walker, Kojima Productions made a big deal in a podcast of revealing that Hayter would be playing the part. For Ground Zeroes, I wouldn't be surprised if they went with Doyle to sell the fact that Big Boss is aging (and to distinguish him from the aging Solid Snake).
  • I'd get over it, but of course it would suck. As far as I'm concerned, Mark Hamill IS the Joker when it comes to voicework for games & animated stuff, but... they've had other people do it too. I don't like the other people as much, but that's life. Hayter IS Snake, but... if he doesn't do it, again - that's life.
  • Seems like it would be hard to replace him, he does a great job in MGS 4 from what I've played.
  • NOOOOOOOOOOO! Don't leave us David!!!!! :(

  • I'd rather they just came up with a new protagonist for the series.
  • I have an oddball theory I want to throw at you. The movie that's coming, I think the actor that is going to p;ay snake will now voice Snake. And I bet that actor is Liam Neeson, based on Snake's newest model.

Just a wild guess. I'll miss Hader though, but I'm all for giving Big Boss more of his own identity.

  • I wouldn't like it.

  • Whoah whoa, let's not compare Snake to Sam Fisher. That's the only thing I have an issue with.
  • I'd have to know more about the game to decide whether or not I would buy it, but I would definitely be disappointed if Hayter was no longer the voice of Snake/Big Boss.

  • There can only be one snake and one big boss and that my friends is DAVID HAYTER. if he left i would stop playing metal gear all together. also check out david hayter back in the day in a movie called the guyver 2 if you havnt already
  • Say it ain't true!
